RAPID CITY, S.D. – Scouts across the Black Hills and surrounding communities teamed up with parents, volunteers and generous residents last week to help restock area food pantries during the 40th annual Scouting for Food drive.
Hundreds of Scouts and volunteers collected thousands of pounds of donated goods from neighborhoods across the region, marking one of the largest community service efforts of the year. The food will be distributed to local pantries to support families facing food insecurity.
Leaders said the long-running drive highlights the Scout commitment to community service and reflects the values laid out in the Scout Oath: “On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country, to obey the Scout Law, to help other people at all times, and to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.”
Those words echoed throughout the Black Hills on Saturday, Nov. 15, as Scouts gathered bountiful donations left by residents on doorsteps and gates.
Organizers say the tradition will continue for years to come. They encourage residents to watch for the familiar yellow collection bags in future drives — a sign that Scouts are once again out in the community, ready to help those in need.
