RAPID CITY, S.D. – South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley today issued a public warning to South Dakota residents, urging them to be cautious of fraudulent donation requests related to the recent devastating flash floods in Texas. The Attorney General emphasized the potential for scammers to exploit public generosity following natural disasters.
Texas has experienced severe flash flooding since July 4, 2025, particularly impacting the Central Texas region and areas along the Guadalupe River. The floods have resulted in significant casualties and widespread damage, prompting a surge in relief efforts.
“Scammers use tragedies like this to prey on the public’s compassion,” said Attorney General Jackley. “I encourage everyone to stay alert, trust your instincts, and verify the request before you act.”
The Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division, serving all of South Dakota, recommends the following tips for those considering donations:
- Donate to Legitimate Organizations: Only contribute to established and reputable relief organizations, such as the Red Cross.
- Beware of Unsolicited Requests: Legitimate organizations, including government agencies, do not solicit donations by telephone or through unsolicited internet messages.
- Avoid Suspicious Links: Do not click on pop-up messages on computers or text messages on phones from unknown sources.
- Consult Trusted Individuals: Before providing money or personal information to an unknown contact, speak with someone you trust.
- Verify Email Addresses: Double-check email addresses for any requests for money. Scammers often use slightly altered email addresses to deceive.
- Independently Verify Callers: If a caller claims to represent a business or government agency, hang up and directly call the organization’s official phone number to verify their identity and the request. Do not trust the number provided by the caller.
- Be Wary of Pressure Tactics: Treat any calls or emails demanding immediate action with suspicion and do not give in to high-pressure sales tactics.
- Protect Personal Information: Never provide financial or personal information over the phone or via the internet unless you are certain of the recipient’s legitimacy.
