UNDATED – A new WalletHub study ranks South Dakota 31st in the nation for income when adjusted for cost of living.

That’s according to reporting by Northern Plains News.

The state’s median income is $72,189, with the top five percent earning over $415,000 and the bottom 20 percent earning just under $18,000.

That’s a gap of more than 23 to 1.

South Dakota’s income gap is wider than most of its neighbors, and rural areas face even greater challenges.
