Leagues expanding to include fifth and sixth grade youth

RAPID CITY, SD—Despite temperature hovering at or over 90 degrees, City recreation officials are already planning for a busy youth flag football season this September.

Registration is open for this fall’s youth flag football leagues, hosted by the City’s Parks and Recreation Department.  The leagues are open to youth in first through sixth grades. Registration deadline is August 27 with the season beginning September 8-11 in the various age categories. Games will be played at the Omaha Street soccer fields.

“It may be hot out but it’s time to think football. There’s always a lot of interest in the youth football leagues and we’re excited to expand our offerings this year to include fifth and sixth grade youth,” said Matt Brandhagen of the City Recreation Department. “The youth flag football leagues are a great way to introduce the game to young participants. Parents can register now and it’s one less thing to work on with the start of school just around the corner.”

The league includes three divisions consisting of first/second grade, third/fourth grade and fifth/sixth grade teams. The first/second grade divisions play on Monday nights beginning September 8, third and fourth grade teams play on Tuesday nights beginning September 9, and fifth and sixth grade teams take to the field on Thursday nights beginning September 11.
