RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City Police say a juvenile male was detained after allegedly attempting to burglarize vehicles in the parking lot of a Wal-Mart store Tuesday.
At approximately 5:35 p.m., police responded to 100 Stumer Road, Rapid City’s Southside Walmart, following a report of a male attempting to break into vehicles in a parking lot. Upon arrival, Rapid City Police Department officers were flagged down by witnesses who reported that the suspect had threatened multiple individuals with a knife.
Police located the suspect near 5th Street and Enchanted Pines Drive, still carrying the weapon. Officers issued loud verbal commands for him to drop the knife, but the suspect did not comply.
A backup unit arrived equipped with a less-lethal beanbag shotgun. After displaying the weapon, the suspect dropped the knife and complied with commands.
Further investigation revealed that the suspect had also stolen property from the store before brandishing the knife at employees and fleeing the building.
The juvenile male was taken into custody without further incident and entered into the appropriate channels of the juvenile justice system. The investigation is ongoing.
