RAPID CITY, S.D. – With anticipated increases in people seeking assistance due to the government shutdown and pending suspension of various benefits, Rapid City Mayor Jason Salamun is issuing a community call to action for citizens to donate food items and to support local organizations providing assistance to those in need.
“In light of the government shutdown and its looming impact on SNAP and other benefits, it’s up to us to step up and help,” said Mayor Salamun. “One of the most effective ways is to contribute directly to organizations who provide meals and food items for those in need in our community.”
The mayor said there are various organizations set up to provide assistance, including Feeding South Dakota, Meals on Wheels, the school lunch program and numerous others. The City’s Public Works Department and AFSCME are collaborating for a fourth year on a community food drive which begins next Monday. Other organizations are set up to receive diapers and formula, winter apparel and toiletry items and other forms of support that can assist those in need.
“Whether as individuals, families, churches, businesses or organizations, let’s rally together and help fill the gap here locally,” said Mayor Salamun. “The government shutdown will have increasing impacts on our community and the smallest gesture of help, such as the donation of food items, toiletry items, diapers and clothing items, can make a big difference to families who are struggling.
“The holiday season is approaching and our community has always been there in time of need, showing a big heart and a willingness to help out. We can all step up and really make a difference in the coming weeks for those in need.”
The mayor advises citizens to reach out to individual organizations, churches and service and support groups on items needed. An additional resource is the Helpline Center and the 2-1-1 information and referral line.
