RAPID CITY, S.D. — Special Olympics South Dakota is bringing hundreds of athletes and Unified partners to Rapid City this month for a pair of Black Hills area tournaments. The competitions serve as a lead-up to the statewide Fall Classic.

The Black Hills Area Bocce Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 23, at Memorial Park from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. A week later, on Saturday, Aug. 30, the Black Hills Area Softball Tournament will take place at Star of the West from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

More than 300 participants from across the Black Hills region, including athletes and Unified partners from Belle Fourche, Rapid City, Spearfish, and Sturgis, are expected to compete. These tournaments are a final tune-up for the Special Olympics South Dakota Fall Classic, which is set for Sept. 19-21 in Rapid City.

Cathy Grubb, Special Olympics Black Hills Area Sports Director, stated that the tournaments “not only give athletes the chance to train and compete, but they also showcase the power of inclusion.” She added that the athletes “truly enjoy competing in Rapid City and sharing their talents with the community.”

Both tournaments are free and open to the public. For more information on the tournaments or to learn about Special Olympics South Dakota, visit www.sosd.org.
