RAPID CITY, S.D. — As the federal government shutdown continues, more than 42 million Americans — including an estimated 72,000 South Dakotans — are set to lose access to SNAP benefits starting November 1st. With so many families facing uncertainty, one local gym is stepping up to make a difference.
605 Grit Fitness has partnered with Feeding South Dakota to collect food and raise funds for those in need. The effort comes at a crucial time, as many households that rely on food assistance prepare for a potentially devastating gap in benefits.
“As the government shutdown looms on, and the funding for Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Programs that support some of the most vulnerable in our community is about to dry up, we saw a need to help,” said Michael Brown, owner of 605 Grit Fitness. “Using our incredibly supportive community within our gym, we decided to team up with Feeding South Dakota. They go where hunger is, instead of hunger having to find them.”
Donation boxes have been placed in three locations — one in the main lobby and one in the 24/7 lobby at 605 Grit Fitness, as well as one at the 24/7 door of Grit 44. In addition, Convicted Designs is also hosting a donation box for community drop-offs.
Residents are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items or contribute financially through Feeding South Dakota’s online donation link. Every $10 raised provides up to 30 fresh meals for families in need, with 100% of all donations going directly to Feeding South Dakota.
The HomeSlice Media Group is also joining the effort, with donation boxes set up in their offices located at 333 W Blvd, Rapid City Suite 200 and a Volunteer Day planned with Feeding South Dakota next week. Those interested in volunteering can contact ryan.teets@feedingsouthdakota.org or scan the QR code provided below to get involved.
“Feeding South Dakota makes it easy to set up your own drive,” Brown added. “They have a quick-access link that allows anyone to start collecting donations and fundraising right away — giving our community an immediate way to take action.”
As thousands of South Dakotans brace for potential food insecurity, this grassroots effort serves as a reminder that even in uncertain times, community strength and compassion remain constant.
