RAPID CITY, S.D. — Rapid City is receiving national recognition for both its quality of life and travel appeal, earning spots on two high-profile lists highlighting the best cities in the United States.
This month, CNN Travel named Rapid City one of “America’s Best Towns to Visit in 2025,” placing it in the top 10. Meanwhile, WalletHub ranked the city 27th out of 148 U.S. cities on its annual “Best Run Cities in America” report, which evaluates municipal efficiency and service quality.
Mayor Jason Salamun praised the dual recognition as a reflection of the city’s strengths.
“Anytime Rapid City ranks among the top cities in America… it’s a reason to stop and really reflect on what’s good about our community,” Salamun said. “These rankings allow us to consider how we can grow and improve as a community.”
A Top Destination in the Black Hills
CNN’s travel editors highlighted Rapid City for its vibrant mix of cultural, historical, and natural attractions. The article specifically mentioned the city’s presidential sculptures downtown, close access to iconic Black Hills landmarks like Mount Rushmore and Badlands National Park, as well as the local food scene and Native American art.
“Taking a page from Mount Rushmore nearby,” CNN wrote, “Rapid City leans into its ‘City of Presidents’ nickname… [and] is close to myriad natural wonders — from the Badlands to the bison herd in Custer State Park.”
Rapid City joins a list of notable destinations including Missoula, Montana; Ithaca, New York; Asheville, North Carolina; and Bend, Oregon.
Among the Best-Run Cities Nationwide

WalletHub’s ranking of the “Best Run Cities in America” considered 36 metrics across six categories: financial stability, education, health, safety, economy, and infrastructure/pollution. Rapid City’s placement at 27th puts it ahead of many larger metros such as Denver, Phoenix, and Boston.
The report emphasized efficient use of budget per capita in delivering high-quality city services. Rapid City scored particularly well in areas such as infrastructure, economic growth, and public safety.
Earlier this year, WalletHub also ranked Rapid City among the top 35 “Happiest Cities in America,” adding to a growing list of national accolades.
Civic Pride and Forward Momentum
With growing attention on the Black Hills hub, local leaders are optimistic about what’s ahead.
“This kind of national recognition helps reinforce why people choose to live, work, and visit Rapid City,” Salamun said. “It also pushes us to keep striving for excellence as we grow.”
As South Dakota’s second-largest city and a gateway to the region’s premier natural wonders, Rapid City continues to stand out—not just for what it offers visitors, but for how it serves its residents.
