RAPID CITY, S.D. — Rapid City Central High School’s beloved mascot, Karl the Cobbler, has been crowned America’s Best High School Mascot after taking first place in the national online tournament hosted by The 64.

The fan-voted competition featured dozens of mascots from across the country, narrowing down to a final four that included the Hutto Hippos (Texas), Hampton Crabbers (Virginia), and Sleepy Hollow Headless Horseman (New York). In the championship round, Karl the Cobbler clinched the top spot thanks to overwhelming support from students, alumni, and the Rapid City community.

Karl’s victory marks a milestone year for Rapid City Central, which celebrated the mascot’s 100th anniversary earlier this season. The character—rooted in the school’s early days when Rapid City was known for its hardworking cobblers and bootmakers—has long symbolized pride, craftsmanship, and resilience.
