RAPID CITY, SD – On Tuesday night the Board of Education motioned to postpone the adoption of a proposed 2025-26 calendar for two weeks to allow time for comments from concerned staff and parents.
“I do like the calendar and how it’s spread out,” said board member Katy Urban “But I do think it is a bit of a departure from the norm”. The calendar in question would allow Seniors to graduate a week earlier than usual (ending on the 15th over the 24th of May, as it was prior), placing graduation dates closer to spring break and easter and is focused on giving students a break “Every four to six weeks”, according to Dr. Cory Strasser, Superintendent of the district. While board members had praise for how this change to the calendar prioritized the needs of students, some had concerns for the community when it came to parents and staff who had scheduled vacation time based on the prior calendar.
The Superintendent’s office was instructed by the board to seek further comment, and the board seeks to revisit the issue and make an informed decision in February.
