RAPID CITY, S.D. — There’s a new way for parents and community members to learn what really goes on inside local public schools, and it’s not coming from a newsletter or a school board meeting. It’s coming straight from the people who live it every day.
The Public School Podcast, hosted by Sarah Hornick and Bobbi Schaefbauer, is nine episodes in and already building a loyal following of listeners eager to get a genuine, behind-the-scenes look at Rapid City Area Schools. Episodes are released every Wednesday and are available anywhere listeners get podcasts.
The idea behind the podcast is simple. Give the public a better understanding of how the school system works by bringing in a new guest each week who plays a vital role in the district. From facilities managers to teachers, librarians to lunch coordinators, the podcast covers it all in a fun and easy-to-digest format. With humor, heart and honesty, Sarah and Bobbi are opening the door to conversations that often go unheard.
“People tend to only hear about schools when something goes wrong,” said Schaefbauer in an early episode. “We wanted to highlight what’s going right, and share the real stories of the people who care deeply about our students.”
So far, they’ve explored the mission and history of the Rapid City Public School Foundation, talked through major facility upgrades and building projects, and shared stories from classroom veterans like beloved teacher Shannon Bren. They’ve also featured summer programming from the Rapid City Public Library, dove into the community’s summer meal efforts, and shared reflections from foundation board members and this year’s Teacher of the Year, Ross Hunter.
Coming up, listeners can expect even more staff spotlights, including paraprofessionals, bus drivers, custodians and other unsung heroes who help shape the school day.
Whether you’re a parent, student, staff member or just someone who cares about education in the Black Hills, The Public School Podcast offers an uplifting and eye-opening listen that reminds us all why strong schools matter.
Episodes are posted every Wednesday and can be found on all major podcast platforms.
