SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Governor Larry Rhoden has recognized September 19, 2025, as POW/MIA Recognition Day in South Dakota. The day is dedicated to honoring and remembering the sacrifices of military prisoners of war and those missing in action.

Jeremiah Schneider, Secretary of the South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs, emphasized the importance of the occasion. “As a veteran myself, I understand the profound significance of this day,” Schneider said. “We owe an enduring debt to our prisoners of war and those missing in action, and we continue to advocate tirelessly for their recovery and recognition.”

The Black Hills and the entire state of South Dakota recognize the sacrifices made. The state currently honors six veterans from the Vietnam War, 33 from the Korean War, and 310 from World War II who are still unaccounted for.

Residents of Rapid City and throughout the state are encouraged to participate in local events, display the POW/MIA flag, and offer support to the families of these service members.
