Patrol identifies Rapid City man killed in wrong way crash

RAPID CITY, S.D. – The highway patrol has identified the person who died Wednesday evening in a two-vehicle crash near Rapid City, SD.

Preliminary crash information indicates Dustin Shawn Walz, 44, of Rapid City, the driver of a 2007 Mazda 3, was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of Interstate 90 near mile marker 53.

James M. Cunningham, age 56, also from Rapid City, the driver of a 2001 Ford F350, was traveling westbound in the in the same lane when the Mazda collided with the Ford head-on.

Walz died at the scene. Cunningham sustained serious, life-threatening injuries.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash. All information released so far is only preliminary.
