RAPID CITY, SD—Effective next week, crews from the City Parks Division will begin removing several Cottonwood trees located in the northwest corner of the intersection of 32nd Street and Jackson Boulevard. The area is part of the City’s greenway adjacent to Jackson Park.

Parks officials indicate the large, aging trees need to be removed for public safety purposes. The tree removals and crown cleaning will take several weeks, according to City Urban Forester Jason Preble.

“Cottonwood trees are not always compatible with high use areas,” said Preble.  “For the safety of the expected pedestrian traffic in the area, it will be better to remove a number of the trees.”

There will be no traffic restrictions during the work period, however drivers and pedestrians are advised to use caution as there will be an increased number of tree-cutting and removal vehicles in the affected area.

Parks officials said the area could be used in the future as an extension of the Jackson Park disc golf course

Officials expect the cutting and removal work to be done in August.
