STURGIS, S.D. – The Meade County Commission this week decided to continue discussion until June 10 on a request to vacate and relocate a section line for a controversial development being proposed by Infinity Properties LLC.
The development on the southwest corner of Elk Creek Road and Haines Avenue is being opposed by some area residents due to a proposed private airstrip that would serve the property.
Opponents turned in a letter to the commission asking for them to take a closer look at issues such as environmental impact, public health, noise, land use classification, and proper land and water management.
However, with no zoning, Meade County Executive Director Rhea Crane says the commission can only determine whether or not the proposed section line’s proposed location is going to be an adequate location.
The commission in March approved a preliminary plat for the development, where Infinity Properties, LLC is proposing 51 lots, including a community lot that would feature the private airstrip.
In a related matter, Meade County Deputy State’s Attorney Ken Chleborad says they are looking into a complaint that the developer illegally had already altered altered the section line.
Chleborad told commissioners that investigation had no bearing on whether or not the commission approves or denies the section line relocation.
Commissioners decided to continue discussion on the matter at their June 10th meeting.
