SUNDANCE, Wyo. – The Crook County, Wyoming Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal house fire that occurred Sunday.
According to a release, on Sunday, September 7, at approximately 12:05 p.m., Crook County dispatch received a report of a fire near 115 Kanode Road. Responding units arrived to find a residence fully engulfed in flames.
Fire crews worked quickly to contain the spread, and neighboring homes were advised to be prepared to evacuate. The fire was contained to approximately 10 acres.
Unfortunately, the residence was a total loss. It is suspected that the homeowner may have succumbed to the fire; however, remains recovered from the residence have not yet been confirmed. The Crook County Sheriff’s Office is working toward verification through DNA testing.
The Wyoming State Fire Marshal’s Office is assisting the Crook County Sheriff’s Office with the ongoing investigation into the cause of the fire.
“This is a tragic situation for our community,” said Sheriff Jeff Hodge. “We are working closely with the Wyoming State Fire Marshal’s Office to determine the cause of this fire and to confirm the identity of the remains. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and neighbors affected.”
Sheriff Hodge added: “I want to thank the fire crews and first responders who acted quickly to contain the fire and protect nearby homes. Their swift action prevented this from becoming an even greater disaster.”
