Rapid City Athlete Conquers 100-Mile Ultramarathon

26-year-old Olivia

What Determination, Training and Wild Grit Mixed With Beauty Can Get You.

RAPID CITY, S.D – In a remarkable display of endurance and perseverance, 26-year-old Olivia, originally from Wisconsin, recently completed a grueling 100-mile ultramarathon in Big Bear, California. This achievement marks a significant milestone in her athletic journey and showcases the incredible potential of human determination.

Olivia, who graduated from the South Dakota School of Mines with a degree in applied biological sciences, has been an athlete for most of her life. From her energetic childhood, where she was involved in every sport available, to her efforts in college—where she played basketball—her dedication to fitness has always been evident. “I’ve always been an extremely hyperactive child,” she shared, nostalgically recounting her days filled with sports and competitions.

Despite stepping back from team sports during her college years to focus on academics, Olivia found solace and strength in running. This led her to sign up for her first ultramarathon, motivated by a desire to challenge herself in a unique and profound way. In May, she registered for the Kodiak 100; the race took place just five months later.

Training for such a demanding event was no easy feat. Olivia dedicated herself to a strict regimen, which included both trail running and road work. “I needed guidance on how to train properly,” she noted, opting for a structured training plan to avoid under training or injury. Her hard work paid off, culminating in an exhilarating and challenging race day.

The ultramarathon, which allowed participants 35 hours to complete the course, was an exercise in both physical and mental endurance for Olivia. The terrain was rugged, presenting a series of challenges that would test even the most seasoned runners. When the going got tough, however, Olivia’s mindset shifted. “I just wanted to finish,” she recalled, pushing through fatigue, pain, and sleeplessness.

In the final stretch of the race, Olivia faced significant hurdles, but her determination never wavered. “I just kept telling myself I could do it,” she explained. A substantial mental shift during a brief rest period motivated her to continue, and she ultimately crossed the finish line as the sun began to rise.

The inspiring journey did not only reveal Olivia’s physical capabilities but also highlighted the importance of community and support. Throughout her training and on race day, she drew strength from the connections she made along the way, particularly with other runners. “Meeting and running alongside others was a vital part of this experience,” she emphasized.

As she reflects on her incredible journey, Olivia hopes to encourage others, particularly young females, to pursue their passions and push their limits. “Lean into what makes you happy,” she advised. “If something isn’t serving you anymore, it’s okay to find something new.”

With the ultramarathon behind her, Olivia is already considering her next adventure, eyeing potential future events like a half Ironman. Her story serves as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved through hard work, perseverance, and an unwavering belief in oneself.

Olivia’s accomplishment is not just a victory for herself, but an inspiring message to all— proving that with determination, anything is possible.
