Robert Allen Berube

Robert Allen Berube, a cherished father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother, passed away peacefully due to natural causes on July 15, 2025, at the age of 90, in Rapid City, South Dakota. Born on December 14, 1934, in Holden, Massachusetts, Robert’s life was a testament to his loving, adventurous, and humorous spirit, which he maintained until his final days.

Robert’s early years were spent in the quaint town of Holden, where he received his education, graduating from Holden High School. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1957 until 1960, a period of his life that instilled in him a sense of discipline and camaraderie that he carried throughout his life. Following his military service, Robert embarked on a career as an appliance technician with Sears, a role he dedicated himself to for 15 years until his early retirement at 55. This allowed him the freedom to pursue his passion for travel and adventure, exploring far-flung destinations and the beauty of his own backyard in South Dakota.

As a devout Christian, Robert’s faith was a guiding light in his life, providing him with comfort and a community of fellow believers. His love for the outdoors was unparalleled; he was an avid fisherman and hunter, often found driving through the picturesque Black Hills, a place he considered a slice of heaven on earth. His dexterity with woodworking was admired by many at the Canyon Lake Senior Citizens Center Wood Working Club, where he spent many happy hours crafting and socializing.

Robert’s sense of humor and love for games, especially Cribbage, brought joy and laughter to those around him. He was a familiar and beloved face at the local senior center, where his quick wit and good-natured ribbing were as much a part of the fabric of the community as the games themselves.

He leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter with his two daughters, Shelly (Todd) Jones of Victor, Idaho and Audrey (Roy) Monnot, and his son, Larry (Cami) Berube, all of whom reside in the warmth of Rapid City. His brothers, Jim, Eddie, and Tom Berube, will remember him as a beacon of brotherly love and camaraderie. Robert’s seven grandchildren, Shane, Desiree, Mindy, Brandi, Reba, Kai, and Cam, along with his four great-grandchildren, will carry forward the tales of his adventures and the echoes of his laughter.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Anne and Ed Berube; his two wives, Joanne Berube and Phyllis Heller-Berube; two companions, Beverly Armstrong and Jennie Oistad; and his sister, Blanche Nylen. Each of them held a special place in his heart and shaped the man he became.

In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, “It is not the length of life, but the depth of life.” Robert Allen Berube indeed lived a life of remarkable depth, touching the hearts of those he met with his infectious joy and boundless love.

His memory will be cherished, his stories retold, and his life celebrated by all who were fortunate enough to know him. Robert’s journey through life was an inspiration, and his memory will be a treasure held dear in the hearts of his family and friends forever.

Upon his request cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time.
