Michael A. Gonzales

Michael A. Gonzales, born on November 20, 1959, in San Juan, New Mexico, passed away peacefully of natural causes on March 3, 2025, in Rapid City, South Dakota. Known for his loving nature, kindness, and generosity, Michael’s zest for life and hearty laughter left a mark on the hearts of all who knew him.

Michael’s early years in San Juan laid the foundation for a life filled with hard work and strong family values. He was a man who learned life’s lessons through experience, earning what he often joked was an “Education of Hard Knocks.” His work ethic was evident from a young age, starting with his first job at a local gas station where he was known for his diligence and handy skills at the pumps and fixing flat tires. Michael’s career path led him to become an electrical apprentice for Doer Electric and later, he bravely worked on oil rigs until an injury curtailed his ability to continue in that line of work.

Despite the challenges he faced, Michael’s spirit remained unbroken. He channeled his energy into the passions that brought joy to his life. His love for speed earned him the affectionate nicknames “Speedy Gonzales” and “Bear.” He reveled in the thrill of driving fast cars, trucks, and motorcycles, each ride echoing his adventurous soul. A true son of New Mexico, Michael had an enduring love for the great outdoors, often found fishing or simply enjoying the tranquility of nature. His culinary tastes remained true to his roots, with a classic red chili with frijoles and a soft tortilla being among his favorite dishes.

Family was the cornerstone of Michael’s world. He is survived by his two daughters, Christy Gonzales and Angellina (Moses) Chavez; his grandson, Marquis, who will forever treasure their playful memories; and his four sisters, Marquita (Joe) Earley, Pauline (Raymond) Aranda, Sheila (Lucky) Gonzales, Carolyn Gonzales and his only surviving uncle, Leonard (Alice) Gonzales. His extended family of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews will also hold his memory dear, each of them touched by his kindness and ever-present willingness to help.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Pablo and Lucy Gonzales and two brothers Carl and Chris Gonzales.

One of Michael’s most cherished experiences was the simple joy of playing with his grandson Marquis on the playground. Like a “baby bear climbing trees,” his laughter and playfulness were infectious, creating a bond and a memory that will endure for generations. This moment encapsulates the essence of Michael’s spirit, a man who found profound happiness in life’s simplest pleasures.

Faith played a significant role in Michael’s life. His love for the Lord Jesus was unwavering, and he accepted Him fully into his heart. His favorite bible verse is Romans 10:13, For, “whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” His passing was graced with the peace that comes from a well-lived life, and a faith deeply held.

Michael’s legacy is a tapestry woven from the lives he touched, the love he shared, and the joy he brought to others. His infectious smile, generous heart, and the echoes of his laughter will remain with us, a comforting presence in the absence of the man who lived fully, loved deeply, and left this world better for his presence.

Michael’s life was a testament to the power of love and the strength of the human spirit. As we say farewell to a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, we take solace in knowing that his journey was rich with love and that he now rests in eternal.
