Kyle R. Gray, a beloved husband, father, and son, passed away peacefully from natural causes on May 23, 2025, in Rapid City, South Dakota, at the age of 62. Born on March 17, 1963, in Mitchell, South Dakota, Kyle’s journey was one marked by devotion to his family, a passion for the outdoors, and a life of meaningful work.
Kyle grew up in the plains of South Dakota and carried with him the values of hard work and persistence instilled by his upbringing. After graduating from Chamberlain High School in 1981, he furthered his education at Mitchell Technical College in Mitchell and later earned a degree with honors in Computer Science from Western Dakota Technical College in Rapid City. His academic achievements laid a solid foundation for his future.
For over four decades, Kyle dedicated himself to his vocation as an automobile mechanic, with the last 20 years of his career spent serving the City of Rapid City. His expertise and commitment to his craft made him a respected figure in the community and among his peers.
Kyle’s heart belonged to the great outdoors, where he found solace and adventure. He was an avid hiker, exploring the untouched corners of the Black Hills and the expansive landscapes of Yellowstone National Park. The joy of these journeys was amplified when shared with his cherished wife, Cheryl, and his two sons, Jerad and Ryan. His love for his family was the cornerstone of his life, and the moments they spent together were his most treasured.
A man of many interests, Kyle reveled in the thrill of drag racing, channeling his creativity and mechanical prowess into building and customizing cars. He approached this hobby not just as a pursuit of speed, but as an art form, finding satisfaction in achieving maximum performance within modest means. His connection to his family farm near Chamberlain remained strong throughout his life, and he relished the times he could return to his roots.
Kyle’s love for animals was evident in his affection for his cats, who brought laughter and light into his home. He also held dear the memories of fishing on the Missouri River and Elm Creek with his father and sons, moments that were a testament to the bonds he forged with his loved ones.
Kyle is survived by his devoted wife of 40 years, Cheryl Sinclair-Gray; his sons, Jerad Gray of Pierre, SD, and Ryan Gray of Lead, SD; his mother, Nolaine Drew of Chamberlain, SD; his brother, Bret (Sherie) Gray of Casper, WY; and his sisters, Kelli (Dave) Muck of Rockerville, SD, and Nikki (Joel) Hardin of Aberdeen, SD. His life was also enriched by the presence of many aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. Kyle was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Willis Gray.
Those who knew Kyle would describe him as handy, creative, and adventurous. He was a man who could fix anything, envision the not-yet-seen, and embark on journeys that others might shy away from. His legacy is one of inspiration and quiet determination.
In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” Kyle lived by this ethos, leaving a trail of innovation, love, and memorable experiences for all who walked alongside him.
Kyle will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those he touched, in the whisper of the trees he once hiked beneath, and in the roar of the engines he loved to tame.
Upon his request cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time.
