John Kinney Heavlin

John Kinney Heavlin, 69, of Rapid City passed away February 9, 2025, in Rapid City.

Born on June 27, 1955, in Rapid City, he was the third of four children born to Arnold and Roseann (Kinney) Heavlin and was a lifelong resident of Rapid City. In 1973 he graduated from Douglas High School and had a 47-year career in multiple leadership roles for the Rapid City area McDonald’s restaurants, before retiring in 2019.

He enjoyed spending time fishing, especially with family. John was an avid sports fan and loved watching his grandchildren play baseball, softball, and any other activities they were involved in. Sitting down with family members to play a board game or cards was another one of his greatest joys. John was a life-long country music fan, who always had a story to tell, and never met a dog he didn’t like (or that didn’t like him).

John is survived by his wife Carla, Rapid City; sister Helen Somersall, Fort Collins, CO; son Jeff (Katie) Heavlin, Sioux Falls; son Daniel (Amanda) Heavlin, Sioux Falls, daughter Darcey (Mike) Martin, Rapid City; step-daughter Heather (Luke) Bindel, Rapid City; step-son Jake (Lindsey) Quasney, Brandon, SD; step-daughter Laura (Dan) Covey, Rapid City; step-son Mark (Laura) Quasney, Brandon, SD; and grandchildren Isaiah Quasney and Elizabeth Covey, Rapid City; Lucy and Beckett Heavlin, Sioux Falls; Hailey Langager and Kaden Martin, Rapid City; Carly and Leland Smith (Sioux Falls); Jackson and Delaney Bindel (Rapid City); Sawyer and Piper Quasney (Brandon); Grant and Ella Quasney (Brandon).

John is preceded by his father Arnold Heavlin, mother Roseann Heavlin, brother Parry Heavlin, sister Margaret Baker, uncle Parry Heavlin, aunt Catherine Heavlin, and grandfather John Kinney.

The family would like to extend their gratitude and appreciation to the staff at Westhills Village Health Care, Monument Hospice, and all the health care workers who provided care and compassion to John and his family.

A private ceremony will take place at a later date. Per the family’s request, please no flowers or memorials. We ask that you honor John’s memory by taking extra time with your loved ones, enjoying activities together.
