Fred Monson Jr.

Fred Monson Jr., 75, of Rapid City, SD, passed away on March 17, 2025.

Fred was born prematurely on January 21, 1950, in Chamberlain, SD, to Fred and Donna (Hickey) Monson. He came into the world a fighter, a trait that stayed with him throughout his life. The second oldest of six children, he grew up with a big heart, a sharp wit, and a love for adventure. He was known for his contagious laugh, a sound that could fill a room and bring a smile to anyone’s face. Fred had a natural charm that made people gravitate toward him—he could strike up a conversation with anyone and leave them feeling like an old friend.

He loved to tell jokes and always had a one-liner for every occasion. Whether it was a well-timed quip or a story that left people in stitches, Fred had a way of bringing humor into every moment. His quick wit and ability to find laughter in any situation made him unforgettable.

Fred also had a love for cribbage and never turned down a game. Whether he was teaching someone new or engaged in a fierce battle of strategy, he took great joy in every peg moved across the board. His competitive spirit and love for the game brought many fun-filled hours with family and friends.

Fred graduated from Rapid City High School in 1968. In 1966, he purchased his first car, a 1930 Model A Victoria, a prized possession that he kept and cherished until his passing. He had a passion for collecting—especially knickknacks, antiques, old tools, cowboy boots, fishing gear, and trinkets. The older, the better. Not all of his treasures sparkled, but to Fred, they all had value. If something had a story or a bit of history behind it, he wanted to hold onto it. His home was filled with these treasures, each one sparking a memory or a tale he was always happy to share.

Fred spent many years driving truck over the road, enjoying the freedom of the open highway and the ever-changing scenery. He also worked in construction for many years, taking pride in the hard work and craftsmanship that came with building something lasting. In 1992, a back injury left him physically unable to return to work, but he continued to share his humor and warmth with those around him.

Fred is survived by his children, Seth (Elizabeth) Monson, Karron (Randy) Zopp, and Anna (Monty) Luthy; his brothers, Randy (Bette) Monson and Terry (Rayann) Monson; his sisters, Chicky (Ray) Townsend, Danette (Gary) Laramore, and Geralyn (Les) Smiley; and numerous grandchildren, extended family, and friends who will cherish his memory.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Donna Monson.
A graveside service will take place at Pine Lawn Cemetery on Friday, March 28th, with a luncheon to follow at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Kinkade Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Fred’s legacy will live on through the laughter, love, and countless memories he shared with those around him.
