Dr. Hao Fong, PH. D., a cherished husband, father, brother, son, and esteemed scientist, passed away peacefully from natural causes on May 19, 2025, in Rapid City, South Dakota. Born on May 14, 1970, in Chuzhou, China, Hao’s journey was one marked by dedication, compassion, and innovation. He leaves behind a legacy of love, learning, and a profound impact on the field of polymer science.

 Dr. Fong immigrated to the United States to pursue his passion for science and earned his Ph.D. in Polymer Science from The University of Akron in Akron, Ohio. His academic achievements laid the foundation for a career that would see him recognized as a pioneer in the field. Dr. Fong was particularly known for his groundbreaking work in electrospinning techniques. As a leading researcher during his tenure at the South Dakota School of Mines in Rapid City, Dr. Fong’s contributions significantly advanced the university’s research enterprise and cemented his reputation as a visionary in his field.

 His entrepreneurial spirit led him to co-found Nanapareil, a successful startup that emerged from his research efforts. This company not only marked a high point in his career but also brought innovative solutions to the industry, showcasing his ability to turn theory into practical, world-changing applications.

 Dr. Fong’s impact extended well beyond the laboratory. He was a mentor to a generation of students, guiding them through their master’s and doctoral studies and shaping the futures of many young scientists. His love for badminton was matched only by his love for his family and friends, with whom he cherished spending quality time.
