Dennis “Swede” Larson passed away peacefully on March 6, 2025, on his 90th birthday, surrounded by the love of his family and the many memories of a life well-lived. Born in 1935 to Arthur and Effie Larson in Onida, South Dakota, Swede’s early years were filled with the warmth of a close-knit community, which he carried with him throughout his life. The family later moved to Blunt, SD, where Swede’s gregarious nature blossomed. Despite leaving school early to enter the workforce, he maintained lifelong friendships with his “Onida gang,” a testament to his loyal and sociable character. Swede’s career was as varied as it was colorful, from driving trucks for Korkows to selling suits, and eventually working at his uncle’s bar in Pierre, SD. It was there that he met the love of his life, Jeanine Brunson. They married on March 2, 1958, and were blessed with two daughters, Sherry Sue and Twila Jean, who brought immense joy to their lives.
Swede wore many hats and trived on being busy. At “Swede’s Texaco,” he was known for his versatility where he could give you a haircut, serve you a beer, pull your teeth and put on a fish fry. His entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly at the Lonetree Bar, a place where the community gathered for unique events, where you may see a raccoon hunt, horses on the bar, motorcycles to the occasional sighting of a black bear. Swede’s ability to create a welcoming and entertaining environment was unparalleled…he never met a stranger and there were always stories and surprises.
One of Swede’s favorite jobs was serving as the Mayor of Blunt for many years, a role he took great pride in. His love for his town was evident in his willingness to lend a hand or equipment whenever needed. His commitment to public service and his genuine concern for the well-being of his fellow citizens left an indelible mark on the community. Oh, yes, he also loved to farm! Swede’s passion for life was not confined to his work. He was an avid outdoorsman, relishing in hunting, fishing, and motorcycle riding. His presence was a staple at local breakfast spots and coffee gatherings, where he would share stories and laughter with friends old and new. Swede’s zest for life was infectious, and his ability to connect with people from all walks of life made him a beloved figure in the community.
Above all, Swede cherished the time spent with his family, especially with his grandson Joshua. Their bond was a source of great happiness for him, and their shared moments became treasured memories for the entire family.
We would need a book to tell all of his tales and adventures, but that will have to wait. Swede joked that he’d like to make it to 100, but would be happy with 90. True to his nature, he left this world just hours after celebrating his 90th birthday, perhaps hinting at a greater celebration awaiting him.
He is survived by his daughter Cheryl (Rick) Bennett of Valentine, NE and their children, Jared Bennett and Jennifer Johnson and their children who made Swede a great grandparent. Twila (Ronnie) Reding of Blunt, Sd and her son Joshua Dennis Mathews. His beloved baby sister Ardis (Perry) DePoy of Eagle Butte, SD and their two children. Preceding him in death was his wife Jeanine, daughter Sherry Sue, his parents, brothers James and Russell Larson and sisters Phyllis Speir and Lucille Evers.
Funeral services were held March 13, 2025 at the Blunt School Gym. In lieu of flowers, Swede’s family suggests donations to one of the following: City of Blunt – Multi Use Facility, Countryside Hospice, Samaritan’s Purse or St. Jude’s.
