Bernard Thomas Smoot, III

Bernard Thomas Smoot, III, a man of great humor and spirit, passed away peacefully of natural causes on March 11, 2025, in Rapid City, South Dakota. Born on June 25, 1966, in Newport News, Virginia, Bernard, known affectionately as Trip to his friends and family, and lived a full life.

Trip spent his years on the waters of the James River where he worked as a waterman for six years, forging a lifelong connection with the river and the outdoors. His passion for craftsmanship led him to a commendable career as a Building Carpenter, a trade he honed and practiced for 40 years. His work as a carpenter took him across the United States, leaving a legacy of structures and memories in numerous communities. Leaving behind a loving family that includes his three daughters, Alexis Kirby, Chelcie Ragsdale, and Angelie Hicks; a son, Justin Smoot; four cherished grandchildren; and a brother, Mark Smoot. Trip was preceded in death by his mother, Sharon Smoot, whose memory he held dear to his heart.

Trip’s interests outside of work reflected his appreciation for the simple pleasures in life. He was an avid fisherman, finding solace in the tranquility of nature and the thrill of the catch. Those who knew Trip would describe him as funny, spirited, and exceptionally handy. His ability to fix and build was only matched by his capacity to bring joy and laughter to any room he entered. Bernard Thomas Smoot, III, will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His stories, his work, and his laughter will resonate with them for years to come.

Upon his request cremation has taken place and he will be laid to rest with his mother in Virginia.
