RAPID CITY, S.D.- A new trail project is being considered to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety in west Rapid City. The City’s Legal and Finance Committee is set to review a resolution supporting a grant application for the Legacy Trail Project, which would connect Mary Hall Park and Raider Park.
Black Hills Works is seeking over $816,000 in grant money from the State of South Dakota’s Transportation Alternatives Program. The city of Rapid City would provide a local match of nearly $180,000.
The first phase of the project would create a safer route to school for students at West Middle School. The trail would follow existing rights of way and be accessible to pedestrians, cyclists, and wheelchair users.
City Grants Division Manager Jamie Toennies noted the project is an example of the city collaborating with community partners to secure outside resources to improve residents’ and visitors’ quality of life.
The Legacy Trail Project is part of a larger proposed trail network that would connect more parks and community locations throughout the Black Hills.
Grant awards are scheduled for early 2026. If the project is funded, construction could begin in 2027. The City’s Legal and Finance Committee will meet Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. in Council Chambers.
