Bruce Bochy’s future with the Texas Rangers is unclear

Bruce Bochy is in the final games of his three-year contract with the Texas Rangers, a span that began with the franchise’s only World Series title. Baseball’s winningest active manager isn’t ready to discuss if he will be back next season. Bochy said before Thursday’s home finale against Minnesota that’s something to talk about after the season. Both Bochy and Chris Young, the team’s president of baseball operations, say they will talk about next season after this one is done. The Rangers, who will miss the playoffs for the second year in a row since that championship in 2023, finish with three games at Cleveland this weekend.

Aaron Glenn’s dance moves on the sideline have made him a viral sensation on social media. Phil Mickelson is an unwanted outsider in what could have been his Ryder Cup at Bethpage

This could have been Phil Mickelson’s Ryder Cup. When Bethpage Black was awarded the 2025 version of USA vs. Europe, all signs pointed toward Mickelson, who built his reputation as a fan favorite on the brawny municipal course outside New York City. Now 55 and with six major titles to his name, Mickelson would’ve been a natural to be leading the U.S. this week. His move to LIV Golf, however, turned him into an outsider in the world of “traditional golf.” In one of the ironies of this year’s event, it’s one of Mickelson’s favorite Ryder Cup partners serving as captain. Mickelson and Keegan Bradley went 4-1 as a team in 2012 and 2014.

Donald Trump heads to the Ryder Cup, embraced by a golf world that once shunned him

Four years ago, President Donald Trump was persona non grata in the golf world, ostracized from the sport he loves in the wake of the U.S. Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021. The PGA of America pulled his chance to host its major championship and officials in his hometown, New York City, tried ousting his company from the golf course it had hired him to run. On Friday, Trump will be front and center at the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black on Long Island — welcomed to the first day of competition by the very powers that once shunned him. The Ryder Cup is run by the PGA of America, the organization that yanked its 2022 PGA Championship from his Bedminster, New Jersey, golf course.

Brondello was the winningest coach in franchise history, going 107-53 in her four seasons with the team. The Liberty got off to a franchise-best start, winning nine straight games, only to stumble over the next few months as injuries took their toll.

Cubs 3B Shaw says he’s ‘not concerned at all’ about backlash for attending Charlie Kirk memorial

Chicago Cubs third baseman Matt Shaw insists he has no regrets about missing a game to attend the memorial for his friend Charlie Kirk, saying he had an invitation from the right-wing commentator’s widow and permission from the team to attend the event in Glendale, Arizona. Shaw says Kirk’s widow Erika texted asking him to attend the event, and that he was “not concerned at all” about any backlash toward him for going. He says he and Kirk lived in the same apartment complex in Arizona and connected through their faith. Kirk, a Chicago area native, would text Shaw after Cubs games. He posed for a photo with Shaw and Chicago infielder Michael Busch on the Cubs’ dugout following a game at Wrigley Field in August. Shaw missed a 1-0 loss at Cincinnati on Sunday.

Scottie Scheffler is No. 1 in the world and one of 12 at the Ryder Cup

Scottie Scheffler has been the No. 1 player for the last 28 months and he’s handled being a target better than anyone since Tiger Woods. But this is the Ryder Cup and being No. 1 as an American hasn’t always worked so well. Woods was in that spot five times and only twice had a winning record. Dustin Johnson managed only one win when he was the top-ranked player. Scheffler doesn’t think much about his role at Bethpage Black except that his job is to win points. Justin Thomas says the U.S. team looks at Scheffler as one of 12.

Ryder Cup money for the American players is about good charity and bad optics

The Americans are an easy target for Europe at the Ryder Cup. It has nothing to do with them being outplayed. It’s about how much they’re getting paid. Europeans have been sniping at the U.S. team for a plan that gives them $300,000 for charity and a $200,000 stipend. The American players say it’s all going to charity. But it’s a bad look and leaves them open to criticism because of all the money in golf. The PGA of America has been paying them for 26 years with all the money designated for charity. This has always been about principle.

New dad Xander Schauffele returns to golf at the Ryder Cup looking for a year-ending win

Xander Schauffele figures to remember this year more for what happened off the golf course than on it. He became a father in late August when his wife, Maya, gave birth to the couple’s first child. The fourth-ranked player in the world finished in the top 10 at the Masters and the British Open and just outside it at the U.S. Open. But Schauffele also did not win a tournament and took some time away from the sport to tend to the big family milestone. He’s back at the Ryder Cup looking to end the season on a positive note with teammate Justin Thomas unconcerned about what to expect from Schauffele.

Buccaneers sign 400-plus pound defensive tackle Desmond Watson to the practice squad, AP source says

Defensive tackle Desmond Watson has been signed to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ practice squad, a person with knowledge of the decision tells The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team hasn’t announce the move. Watson was originally signed by the Buccaneers after going undrafted in April. He weighed 464 pounds at the school’s pro day and was considered the heaviest player in NFL history. The 6-foot-6 Watson lost 25 to 30 pounds before the draft but didn’t get a chance to practice with the Buccaneers because he didn’t lose enough weight. He spent training camp on the non-football injury list.

Ravens pushed around, Jackson chased down in humbling 38-30 loss to Lions

Pushed around on defense and manhandled when they had the ball, the Baltimore Ravens stumbled mightily at home in an ugly, surprising defeat. The Ravens allowed the Detroit Lions to amass 426 yards — including a whopping 224 on the ground == which proved to be simply too much for Lamar Jackson and Baltimore’s high-powered offense to overcome. Jackson was sacked seven times, Derrick Henry fumbled in the fourth quarter when the game was still close, and Baltimore absorbed a humbling 38-30 loss on Monday night.

Lions run over the Ravens, sack Lamar Jackson 7 times in a 38-30 win over Baltimore

Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery ran for two touchdowns apiece, and the Detroit Lions bullied their way to a 38-30 win over the Baltimore Ravens. The Lions sacked Lamar Jackson seven times and outrushed the Ravens 224 yards to 85. Detroit scored on drives of 98 and 96 yards against a Baltimore front that was without defensive lineman Nnamdi Madubuike and showed little ability to handle the Lions physically up front. Up 31-24 at the two-minute warning, Detroit converted on fourth-and-2 from their own 49 when Jared Goff completed a 21-yard pass to Amon-Ra St. Brown. Then Montgomery raced for a 31-yard touchdown with 1:42 to play, capping a 151-yard night for the running back.

Patrick Cantlay showed up at Bethpage Black wearing a hat. That’s noteworthy at the Ryder Cup considering what Cantlay endured two years ago in Rome. He played the back nine at Marco Simone in front of thousands of hat-waving heckling fans. They were responding to an unfounded report that he wasn’t wearing a hat to protest not being paid. Cantlay had no idea why they were doing it until after he won his match. Overlooked in that scene was his clutch performance. For all the noise surrounding Cantlay, he has become one of the most clutch putters for the Americans.
