But Melvin said after Sunday’s 4-0 victory against Colorado to conclude his second season that he had received no assurances about managing in 2026. The Giants finished 81-81 for one more victory than in Melvin’s first year.

Ryder Cup in European hands no matter where they play

Rory McIlroy remembers the tears the last time he fell short in a Ryder Cup. What really stung were the words. The Americans were coming off a 10-point victory and spoke four years ago about changing the course of the Ryder Cup. It’s still on a European path. Team Europe made it closer than it needed to be. It still wound up winning at Bethpage Black. That’s two straight wins since that 10-point American victory. Nothing has changed. If anything, Europe might be getting better. It now has won 11 out of the last 15 times in the Ryder Cup.

Eagles send a message to the NFL and the 31 other teams with the fake tush push

Nick Sirianni and the Philadelphia Eagles sent a message to the NFL and the 31 other teams in Week 4. The reigning Super Bowl champions don’t need a tush push to win. And for those who consider it a boring play, now there’s a new twist. The fake makes it even more difficult for opponents to stop and more interesting to watch. Facing a team that had their number and one that actually had some success against Philadelphia’s signature play, Sirianni and offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo mixed things up. Saquon Barkley scored a touchdown on a fake tush push and Jalen Hurts tossed an underhanded TD pass on a variation of it in a 31-25 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

Veteran All-Star Kayla McBride scored 31 points, but it wasn’t enough to force a Game 5. The Lynx played without suspended coach Cheryl Reeve and All-Star guard Napheesa Collier, who was injured. It was fitting in many ways that Brayan Rocchio hit the walk-off homer that put an exclamation point on the Cleveland Guardians’ historic run to an AL Central title. Even though Cleveland had secured its 13th division crown in the eighth inning when Boston beat Detroit, the Guardians weren’t content to let the AL Central race finish in a tie and win it on a tiebreaker. Cleveland rallied from two runs down to force extra innings. Texas pinch-hitter Rowdy Tellez put the Rangers up 8-5 with a three-run homer in the 10th, but the Guardians came back again with Bo Naylor’s RBI double in the bottom half and then Rocchio’s three-run drive down the right-field line that hit the foul pole and gave them a 9-8 victory.

Asked what he might have done differently in a Ryder Cup that got away early, U.S. captain Keegan Bradley focused on the way he set up the course at Bethpage Black. It was one of many decisions he made that played into a closer-than-expected 15-13 loss. Bradley’s decision to stick some strange foursomes pairings and also not to choose himself for this team could have played into the loss. In the end, though, he said not setting up Bethpage to be its typically brawny self might have given the Europeans a slight edge in their first away victory since 2012.

New York’s loss meant Cincinnati earned the final NL wild card despite losing at Milwaukee.

Micah Parsons is set to take center stage as Green Bay visits Dallas exactly a month after the Cowboys traded the star pass rusher. Parsons says he has never needed fuel for a football game. There will be plenty anyway, no matter what the two-time All-Pro says. The blockbuster deal ended a long and acrimonious contract stalemate between Parsons’ camp and Dallas owner Jerry Jones. Fans tried to implore Jones to pay Parsons as the drama lingered through training camp and the preseason. Now they might have to watch Parsons lead a Green Bay blowout.

It might be fair to say nobody was going to beat a Ryder Cup duo on a roll — one that’s so good, it has its own nickname, “Fleetwood Mac.” But Harris English and Collin Morikawa against one of Europe’s best teams never seemed like a fair fight. American captain Keegan Bradley put those two together not once but twice, and bad luck paired them against Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood both times. The Americans didn’t make it past the 16th hole in either match, and their 3-and-2 loss in Saturday’s foursomes could have been worse had they not fought back to win two holes in a row toward the end.

On fourth-and-12 at the 27, Tommy Castellanos’ heave into the end zone was intercepted by Ja’Son Prevard, with Cavaliers fans instantly storming the field.

Reds overtake Mets for NL’s 3rd wild-card spot by beating Brewers 3-1

Gavin Lux hit two doubles and scored the go-ahead run as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 3-1, overtaking the New York Mets for the third National League wild-card spot. Cincinnati’s win and New York’s 6-2 loss to Miami enabled the Reds to tie the Mets in the standings. However, the Reds — vying for their first postseason berth since 2020 — own the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Mets. The Reds handed a rare loss to Quinn Priester after he had set a Brewers record by winning 12 straight decisions.

Aaron Nola shakes off miserable season and stakes his claim for spot in Phillies’ playoff rotation

Aaron Nola has shown he might still be valuable for the Phillies in the postseason. On Friday night, he pitched a near-perfect game against the Twins, leading to a 3-1 victory. Nola took a perfect game into the sixth inning and moved into second on Philadelphia’s career strikeout list. He allowed just two hits and struck out nine over eight innings. Despite a challenging season with injuries and inconsistency, Nola’s performance suggests he could be a key player for the NL East champions. Phillies manager Rob Thomson is considering using him out of the bullpen in the playoffs.

Scottie Scheffler goes 0-2, the worst first day at the Ryder Cup for a world No. 1 since Tiger Woods

No. 1 in the world is 0-2 at this Ryder Cup, and Scottie Scheffler had the worst first day by a top-ranked player since Tiger Woods. Scheffler lost again in foursomes — and as always in that format at the Ryder Cup, lost badly — in the morning with Russell Henley, then went back out with U.S. Open champion J.J. Spaun for a loss in fourballs in the afternoon. By himself, Scheffler is winning more often than anyone in golf. But his teams were behind nearly throughout both his matches Friday, and with Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau both going 0-2, the Americans trailed Europe 5 1/2 to 2 1/2 overall.

Europe got off to a strong start at the Ryder Cup thanks to familiar pairings and some of its most dependable players. Jon Rahm looked comfortable playing with Tyrrell Hatton during morning foursomes Friday, then holed three birdies in tandem with Sepp Straka to pick up another point in afternoon fourballs. Rahm is now 8-1-3 at the Ryder Cup dating to his defeat of Tiger Woods in singles play in Paris in 2018. Tommy Fleetwood also contributed to Europe picking up two points on Day 1 by winning foursomes with partner Rory McIlroy and then again in fourballs with Justin Rose.

Trump swings by the Ryder Cup, soaking up fans’ love after vowing revenge on more of his enemies

President Donald Trump started Friday by warning that more of his enemies will face prosecution, shaking the foundations of the American justice system by treating it as a tool of political retribution. And then he jetted off to the Ryder Cup to enjoy the rest of the day as the golfer-in-chief, watching the U.S. face off with Europe as the sun shined and the crowd cheered. It was the latest and most striking example of how Trump has taken center stage at sporting events, putting his personal imprint on ostensibly nonpartisan activities, even at one of the most fraught moments of his second term.

The Yankees and Blue Jays are both headed to the playoffs regardless of their results over the next three days, but the division winner gets a first-round bye.

Marvin Harrison Jr. soared above a defensive back, snagged the ball at the high point and pulled it down for a key touchdown in Arizona’s comeback attempt. The Cardinals’ second-year receiver didn’t celebrate, opting instead to kneel with an arm over the front of his helmet before jogging off the field. After the first half he had, Harrison seemed more relieved than excited about pulling down a highlight-reel touchdown. Harrison caught a touchdown pass and had a pair of key catches on Arizona’s final drive, but also bobbled a pass that led to a first-half interception in the Cardinals’ 23-20 loss to the Seattle Seahawks

The Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Guardians are both 86-73 and tied atop the American League’s Central Division with three games remaining. The last time the division was remotely close after 159 games was in 2014, when the Tigers had a two-game lead on the Kansas City Royals. The last time the AL Central was tied at this point was 2006 when the Tigers and Minnesota Twins had 95-64 records. The Tigers snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 4-2 win over Cleveland on Thursday night and go into Boston in control of their own destiny. Even though the Guardians were unable to sweep the Tigers for the second time in less than two weeks, they still got what they wanted by taking two out of three games. Cleveland hosts Texas beginning Friday.

Lakers coach JJ Redick received extension ahead of full season of LeBron James-Luka Doncic pairing

The Los Angeles Lakers know head coach JJ Redick will be a part of their future going forward, and plan to give superstar forward LeBron James every chance to do the same. General manager Rob Pelinka said Redick received a contract extension this summer after the 41-year-old completed his first season leading the Lakers, who went 50-32 to finish third in the Western Conference and lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves in five games in a first-round playoff series. Getting Redick to sign a new deal after superstar point guard Luka Doncic agreed to a three-year, $165 million maximum contract extension through 2028 in August leaves James as the last piece of the Lakers’ headlining trio without certainty after this season after picking up his $52.6 million player option in June.
