Haliburton welcomes back his father with historic performance in Pacers win

Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton didn’t get any pregame hugs or handshakes from his father, John, Tuesday night for Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals. At least not on the court. But the fact that the elder Haliburton was back in the arena — albeit in an upstairs suite instead of a courtside seat — still felt like a win for the two-time All-Star and the Pacers. John Haliburton was forced to watch Indiana’s previous eight postseason games from afar after he ran onto the court and confronted Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo following his son’s last-second shot to eliminate Milwaukee for the second straight year.

California opens track-and-field finals to more girls after success of trans athlete

The governing body for California high school sports has changed its competition rules for this weekend’s state track-and-field championship. It will allow more girls to qualify for the meet. The move comes amid controversy over the participation of a trans student-athlete who qualified for the meet. President Donald Trump referenced the athlete in a social media post threatening to pull federal funding in California if the state did not bar trans girls from participating in girls sports. California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office says the rule change ahead of the championship meet is reasonable.

The Tour Championship is getting another overhaul. The PGA Tour has voted to scrap the controversial staggered start for the FedEx Cup finale. Starting this year, the 30 players who qualify for East Lake will all start at even par. The low score on a tougher setup wins the FedEx Cup. There could be a few more tweaks. And still to be determined is the payout. The tour said the distribution would be a little more balanced to account for all 30 players having an equal chance. It also wants to be sure the top player all season is rewarded.

The Oklahoma City Thunder found all kinds of soft spots in the defense and consistently hit those open shots over two decisive wins to start the Western Conference finals. The Minnesota Timberwolves tightened up their pressure with a back-to-basics approach on their home court that fueled a 143-101 victory in Game 3. Shohei Ohtani likely won’t make big league mound return until after All-Star break

On the eve of Shohei Ohtani facing batters for the first time since elbow surgery in September 2023, Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said the two-way star likely won’t return to a major league mound until after the All-Star break. Ohtani is to pitch batting practice before Sunday night’s series finale against the New York Mets. Roberts says “he’s doing his first simulated game for two innings and in theory you got to build a starter up to five, six innings.” He adds: “And so just the natural progression, I just don’t see it being before that.”

Red Sox prospect Marcelo Mayer gets a ride to Fenway Park for his big league debut

Marcelo Mayer, Boston’s No. 2 overall prospect, was promoted to the Red Sox and needed to get a ride to Fenway Park to start against the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday. The reason he didn’t drive himself: He lost his car keys “like three weeks ago.” Mayer was promoted from Triple-A Worcester when third baseman Alex Bregman was placed on the 10-day injured list with a significant right quad strain.

Judge insists that despite hitting .395 with 18 homers, he doesn’t ‘feel too great at the plate’

Aaron Judge insisted he doesn’t pay too much attention to his numbers, which for the record are eye-opening. He’s hitting .395 with 18 homers and 46 RBIs. Even more, the New York Yankees slugger also hinted he’s not as locked in as one might think. He said he doesn’t “feel too great at the plate” after New York’s 13-1 win over the slumping Colorado Rockies on Saturday. Now that’s a scary thought. After all, he’s flirting with .400 well into May. He has certainly taken a liking to Coors Field in his first regular season visit this weekend, homering in back-to-back games.

They will go into the final round Sunday tied four strokes ahead of the field and with world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler lurking not much further back. PGA champ Scheffler still has shot at 3rd win in row with big move at Colonial despite 3 late bogeys

Scottie Scheffler knew he had to make a bunch of birdies in the third round at Colonial for any chance to win in his third consecutive start. The world’s No. 1 player did just that, but also had three bogeys on the back nine. Scheffler shot a 6-under 64 at Hogan’s Alley to get to 7 under, and will begin the final round within six strokes of the lead. He began the third round 10 strokes back at the Charles Schwab Challenge. It comes a week after his third major victory at the PGA Championship, and after winning his beloved hometown Byron Nelson tournament earlier this month.

Austin Cindric not concerned about future with Team Penske after his father was fired this week

Austin Cindric is not worried about his future with Team Penske after his father Tim Cindric was fired by team owner Roger Penske as the team’s IndyCar president earlier this week following a cheating scandal at the Indianapolis 500. Cindric drives the No. 2 Ford Mustang for Penske in the NASCAR Cup Series and is currently 12th in the points standings with three top-10 finishes in 12 races, including a win at Talladega. Given the family ties with Team Penske it raised some speculation about how it might impact him. When asked if he was given assurances from Penske, Cindric said he didn’t think “it was even in question.”

U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau got a taste of speed on Saturday, roaring around Indianapolis Motor Speedway in a two-seat IndyCar. But he says the success of his YouTube channel, which boasts nearly 2 million subscribers, has given him the confidence to do some outside-the-box things. Another one: Hitting tee shots off the Turn 2 terrace onto Brickyard Crossing, the golf course adjacent to the racetrack that winds four of its holes through the infield.

Doubling down: Kyle Larson preps to run Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 after last year’s washout

Kyle Larson is doubling down on “The Double.” Larson is set to run both the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday, a task he set out to do last year but never had a chance to complete after weather disrupted the NASCAR star’s plans. A year ago rain delayed the start of the Indianapolis 500. That put Larson, who finished 18th after a pit lane speeding penalty, well behind schedule. He arrived in Concord 249 laps into the 400-lap Cup Series Race and was set to take over for replacement driver Justin Allgaier and finish the race. But lightning and heavy rains forced NASCAR to call the race early.

Kyle Larson will take another crack at “the Double” on Sunday by trying to complete every lap of the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on the same day. Tony Stewart is the only one to have pulled it off. But while attempts have been rare, that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of drivers interested in it. Two-time defending Indy 500 winner Josef Newgarden, Team Penske teammate Scott McLaughlin and reigning IndyCar series champion Alex Palou all expressed some desire to give it a try this week. It takes some serious financial support, the backing of teams in both IndyCar and NASCAR, logistical help, and plenty of luck.

Bennett scored a second time by skating in to clean up an attempt at the right post in the final minute of the second period to make it 4-0, ending a long shift in Carolina’s end prolonged by Hurricanes defenseman Brent Burns being stuck on the ice after breaking his stick. Pirates GM Ben Cherington says trading ace Paul Skenes is ‘not at all part of the conversation’

The last-place Pittsburgh Pirates have no interest in trading young ace Paul Skenes. General manager Ben Cherington says moving the 22-year-old Skenes is “not part of the conversation at all.” The Pirates are already 11 games out of playoff position before Memorial Day thanks in large part to an offense that ranks near the bottom of the majors in nearly every major category. While the Pirates have a deep pool of pitching prospects, they are lacking in quality young position players in the minors. Trading Skenes might help, but Cherington says that discussion is a non-starter. The reigning National League Rookie of the Year is 3-5 with a 2.44 ERA in 2025.

Pulisic among the US starters to miss CONCACAF Gold Cup, last competitive matches before World Cup

Christian Pulisic, Yunus Musah, Antonee Robinson, Josh Sargent and Joe Scally will miss the CONCACAF Gold Cup, leaving the United States with a depleted roster for its last competitive soccer matches before the 2026 World Cup. Weston McKennie, Tim Weah and Gio Reyna already were expected to miss the regional championship of North and Central America and the Caribbean because FIFA ruled the expanded Club World Cup has priority on players over national teams. U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino announced his 27-man squad for friendlies ahead of the tournament, and missing players also included defender Cameron Carter-Vickers and midfielder Tanner Tessmann.

Trump’s Harvard visa threat could wipe out several of the school’s sports teams

Some of Harvard’s sports teams would be virtually wiped out by a Trump administration decision that would make the Ivy League school ineligible for international student visas. Large portions of the men’s rowing and squash and women’s soccer and golf rosters list international hometowns on the school’s website. Sportico reported last month that 21% of the players on Harvard athletic rosters for the 2024-25 seasons had international hometowns. The Department of Homeland Security on Thursday revoked Harvard’s ability to enroll international students, saying the school has not adequately protected Jewish students from antisemitism on campus.

Clark said before the Indiana Fever’s WNBA game at the Atlanta Dream on Thursday night that she was so caught up in the Pacers’ come-from-behind 138-135 overtime win at the New York Knicks on Wednesday night that she took video of her reaction to the game’s signature play. Stars get some secondary scoring and power-play goals, now seek 2-0 series lead over Oilers

It’s really not as bad as it sounds for the Dallas Stars that Mikko Rantanen has gone four playoff games in a row without scoring a goal. That just means they are starting to get more points from other players. Dallas won three of those games, the latest 6-3 on Wednesday night in the opener of the Western Conference final rematch against Edmonton. Game 2 is Friday night in Dallas. The Stars scored a franchise playoff-record five goals in the third period, with three of those coming. on power plays. The Denver Nuggets have named David Adelman their head coach, taking the interim tag off his title after he led them into the second round of the NBA playoffs. Scott McLaughlin angrily defensive, utterly motivated after Team Penske penalties ahead of Indy 500

Scott McLaughlin defended team owner Roger Penske and said he is more motivated than ever to win the Indianapolis 500 after a week of upheaval within his race team. Last weekend, a piece on the cars of teammates Josef Newgarden and Will Power was found to be illegally altered, leaving to severe penalties. The part in question was not on McLaughlin’s car. His punishment came in the form of the firing of three top Team Penske officials, one of whom served as his strategist. Throw in the fact McLaughlin wrecked his primary car in practice last weekend and there is a lot for him to overcome in the race on Sunday.

Roger Penske personally told Will Power about the firings of Team Penske’s top three executives and the decision came after a sleepless night of contemplating how to handle a cheating scandal ahead of the Indianapolis 500. Penske cleaned house after the cars for both Power and two-time defending Indianapolis 500 winner Josef Newgarden failed inspection ahead of Sunday’s final round of qualifying. The cars were found to have modified a spec part. IndyCar said it has found no evidence the modification provided a competitive advantage. But it was the second major technical violation for Team Penske in just over a year.

Tyrese Haliburton might be seizing that the same way the Indiana Pacers seized Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals away from the New York Knicks. With three memorable shots in nearly impossible-to-imagine comeback victories, Haliburton has become the heir apparent to Miller as the Pacers’ man of the (last) moment and has them three wins from the NBA Finals. Chicago Blackhawks hire Jeff Blashill as head coach, hoping for a turnaround

The Chicago Blackhawks are giving Jeff Blashill a second chance to prove himself as a head coach in the NHL. The 51-year-old Michigan native coached the Detroit Red Wings for seven seasons. He was let go after the team went 32-40-10 during the 2021-22 season. While Blashill had an underwhelming stay with Detroit, he has a player development background that likely was appealing for the rebuilding Blackhawks. He has coached in the AHL and USHL, along with the college ranks. Blashill spent the last three seasons as an assistant to Jon Cooper with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Among its success stories are the sons of two prominent veterans of the racing industry.
