Vikings’ Purple People Eater Jim Marshall, the ‘all-time iron man,’ dies at 87

Former Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jim Marshall has died after a long hospitalization for an undisclosed illness. He was 87. Marshall was one of the four members of the famed Purple People Eaters front that formed the backbone of four Super Bowl teams. The Vikings announced Marshall’s death Tuesday on behalf of his wife, Susan. He played 19 of his 20 seasons in the NFL with Minnesota. The two-time Pro Bowl pick set a league record for position players with 282 consecutive games played. That mark was held by Marshall until Brett Favre broke it with the Vikings in 2010.

Whether ratings are good or not, Thunder-Pacers could be a series true basketball fans enjoy

It’s No. 25 Indiana vs. No. 47 Oklahoma City in the NBA Finals. That’s not their seeding. That’s their media market ranking. To some, that might matter. A title matchup that starts Thursday night between the Pacers and Thunder has two young, fun teams that score a ton and are led by marketable stars. That the good news. Here’s the inevitable other side: The ratings, especially at the start of the series, probably aren’t going to be good because the home markets are so small. Those who like the NBA won’t be dissuaded by that. Those who don’t like the NBA will tout it as great failure.

Walter said he has watched the video and doesn’t remember the specific moment but acknowledged “that language doesn’t reflect my values or the standards of this program.” Wake Forest athletic director John Currie said he was “surprised and deeply disappointed.” Tennessee beat Wake Forest 11-5 on Monday night to win the Knoxville Regional and earn a best-of-three super regional matchup with Arkansas for a chance to advance to the College World Series.

Can Timberwolves keep Randle, Reid, and Alexander-Walker? Connelly says continuity is best

The Minnesota Timberwolves have plenty of reason to run back the same roster after reaching the Western Conference finals for the second straight time. That was their initial assessment last year as well before the big trade that sent Karl-Anthony Towns to the New York Knicks went down right before the beginning of training camp. President of basketball operations Tim Connelly said he doesn’t feel pressure to make roster changes out of confidence in the team’s core. Keeping Julius Randle, Naz Reid and Nickeil Alexander-Walker will be difficult. All three players could become free agents.

A person aware of the situation, speaking on condition of anonymity, tells the AP that caddie Bill Harke is out of a job. Homa wasn’t interested in sharing details. He only wanted to talk about golf. He three-putted for par on his final hole. That put him in a 5-for-1 playoff that was won by Cameron Young. The Stanley Cup final goalie matchup: Bobrovsky and Skinner, matching wits once again

The only times that Sergei Bobrovsky spent any time really reflecting on winning the Stanley Cup were the obvious moments. The on-ice celebration that night. The day of the parade. Things like that. Otherwise, he did what he always does. He looked at what was next. It is a simple approach and it works best for the Florida goaltender, who is about to play in the Stanley Cup Final for a third consecutive season. And in this title series, he’ll likely be matching goalie wits with Stuart Skinner again — the Edmonton netminder who was in goal for last year’s Stanley Cup Final.

Mariners slugger Cal Raleigh leads MLB in homers and is on pace to set a season record for catchers

Given the way Cal Raleigh’s season has started, perhaps the Seattle Mariners catcher is wholly deserving of those “MVP” chants. With a solo shot during Seattle’s 2-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins, Raleigh upped his total to a major league-leading 23 home runs. The 28-year-old backstop nicknamed Big Dumper became the first catcher in big league history to reach 20 homers before the end of May. Salvador Perez of the Kansas City Royals holds the major league record for home runs in a season by a catcher with 48 in 2021. Raleigh is on pace for 64 this year, which would break the American League mark of 62 set by Aaron Judge in 2022.

Giants’ pitching is winning games despite the team’s offensive woes

Runs have been hard to come by lately for the San Francisco Giants. The good news is their pitching staff has made it just as difficult for opponents to score them. San Francisco ended may with a Major League-best 2.64 ERA, while going 14 straight games without scoring more than four runs. That theme continued in their series against the Miami Marlins, where they took two of three in South Florida. The Giants (33-26) reached the four-run threshold just once, in Sunday’s 4-2 win, while limiting the Marlins to just three runs over the three-game series.

Outfielder Corbin Carroll, second baseman Ketel Marte and shortstop Geraldo Perdomo lead a lineup that’s been one of the most productive in the big leagues.

SEC amps up fines to $500,000 for rushing field, storming court

The Southeastern Conference is ratcheting up penalties on schools whose fans storm the field or rush the court, doing away with an escalating fine system and now charging $500,000 per incident. The conference also has the authority to wave the fine if the visiting team and officials are allowed to get to the locker room before fans descend onto the field or court. The new policy replaces an old one that called for an escalating fine structure that started with $100,000 for the first offense, raised to $250,000 for the second then hit $500,000 for the third.

Jordan Spieth ignores caddie’s smart advice and makes birdie from rough at Memorial

Jordan Spieth doesn’t know of anyone who hates chipping back to the fairway more than him. He was presented another such situation Thursday at the Memorial. As usual, it was high entertainment. Spieth was buried in nasty rough and had 115 yards to get to the fairway. He wasn’t sure he could do that. Caddie Michael Greller suggested chipping out. Spieth was having none of that. Spieth says chipping out is so demoralizing to him that he’ll make bad decisions. This one worked out. He reached the fairway and made a 25-foot putt for birdie. He shot even-par 72.

College sports lurches forward, hoping to find a level playing field with fewer lawsuits

On the one hand, what this new version of cash-infused college sports needs are rules that everybody follows. On the other, they need to be able to enforce those rules without getting sued into oblivion. The newly created College Sports Commission will be in charge of counting the money, deciding what a “fair market” deal for players looks like and, if things go well, helping everyone in the system avoid trips to court whenever a decision comes down that someone doesn’t like.

California changed rules for a track-and-field meet after a trans athlete’s success. What to know

California is opening up its track-and-field championship to more girls after a transgender athlete drew controversy for qualifying for the meet. The state announced the change Tuesday after high school junior AB Hernandez qualified for the final. President Donald Trump referenced Hernandez in a social media post saying California must comply with an executive order he issued aimed at barring trans girls from competing in girls sports. Debates are ongoing nationwide over fairness in sports and the participation of transgender female athletes. Some experts say the rule may be discriminatory while others say it adds inclusivity because more athletes can compete.

Additionally, the Dolphins are still pursuing trade options for cornerback Jalen Ramsey. Coach Mike McDaniel declined to give details on why the relationship deteriorated.

Soto falls deeper into slump with another hitless game in Mets’ loss

Juan Soto’s numbers are getting ugly. The slumping New York Mets slugger went hitless again Wednesday and failed to get the ball out of the infield in a 9-4 loss to the Chicago White Sox. After signing a record $765 million contract in December as a free agent, Soto is batting a measly .224 with eight homers and 25 RBIs in 55 games during a turbulent first season with the Mets. The four-time All-Star and five-time Silver Slugger winner was 0 for 4 with a walk and a strikeout Wednesday in a dreary performance. He is hitless in his last 16 at-bats and hasn’t homered since May 9, a span of 75 plate appearances.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh was available to local reporters for the first time since they announced May 5 they were releasing kicker Justin Tucker. The five-time All-Pro had been accused by over a dozen massage therapists of inappropriate sexual behavior, according to reporting by the Baltimore Banner. The NFL said it would investigate, but it’s not clear when that process will conclude. Harbaugh says it was a complex decision-making process on what to do with Tucker. But ultimately the team needed to have a kicker ready to go for Week 1.

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams made an attempt to quiet a controversy about how he had wanted to go to the Minnesota Vikings rather than his current team. Williams says he did have interest in the Vikings after a visit there but it all ended when he made a trip to Chicago, which owned the first pick in the 2024 draft. Then he decided he wanted to be the one who ended a long drought since the Bears last had a winning quarterback. Williams also labeled as false a part of the report suggesting he didn’t know how to watch film last year and the Bears failed to help him.

The 24-year-old acknowledged he naturally put on some weight but doesn’t want to say how much and insists it was not a mission of his. Teammates and coaches noticed Daniels is bigger and stronger and chalk it up to a motivated competitor eager to get better.

U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., speaks to supporters about plans to run for the governor of Alabama in 2026, Tuesday May 27, 2025 at Byron's Smokehouse in Auburn, Ala. (AP Photo/ John David Mercer)

Hall of Famers. A Heisman winner. An MMA fighter. Tuberville is not the only sports politician

Tommy Tuberville is a U.S. senator running for Alabama governor. His new campaign paraphernalia recognize his old job: coach. The former football coach at Auburn University leaned into that branding after announcing his bid for office Tuesday. It’s a deliberate tactic that demonstrates how figures like Tuberville transition from athletics to politics. Others have done it successfully, from Gerald Ford to Bill Bradley. Though there are no sure bets, as Herschel Walker’s bid for Senate showed. And as women’s professional sports grow in popularity, one expert says more women could use the platform to seek public office.

Haliburton welcomes back his father with historic performance in Pacers win

Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton didn’t get any pregame hugs or handshakes from his father, John, Tuesday night for Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals. At least not on the court. But the fact that the elder Haliburton was back in the arena — albeit in an upstairs suite instead of a courtside seat — still felt like a win for the two-time All-Star and the Pacers. John Haliburton was forced to watch Indiana’s previous eight postseason games from afar after he ran onto the court and confronted Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo following his son’s last-second shot to eliminate Milwaukee for the second straight year.
