‘Dialed in’ from October, the Panthers are a win away from repeating as Stanley Cup champions

The Florida Panthers are one win on home ice away from repeating as Stanley Cup champions. That chance comes Tuesday night in Game 6 of the final against the Edmonton Oilers. They’re looking to be the third team to go back to back since the NHL’s salary cap era began in 2005 and the 19th in league history. The Panthers moved to the verge of another title by beating the Oilers on the road and taking a 3-2 lead in the series. They hope to avoid the same pitfall of losing their first close-out game like the final last year against Edmonton.

US hockey announces initial 6 players for 2026 Milan Olympics

The U.S. named Brady and Matthew Tkachuk, Auston Matthews, Jack Eichel, Quinn Hughes and Charlie McAvoy as its first six players for the 2026 Olympics. General manager Bill Guerin said that group of four forwards and two defensemen avoids goaltenders because USA Hockey wanted to let the first half of the next NHL season play out. Canada and Sweden also picked six skaters for their preliminary rosters. Playing in the Stanley Cup Final, Connor McDavid was among those chosen for Canada. This would be his first Olympics after the league did not take part in 2018 and 2022.

Connor McDavid is producing in the Stanley Cup Final, but is it enough for the Oilers?

Connor McDavid scored his first goal of this Stanley Cup Final in Game 5, only after he and the Edmonton Oilers fell behind 3-0 on the way to getting pushed to the brink by the defending champion Florida Panthers. He has a series-best six assists, and only Leon Draisaitl has more points than McDavid’s seven. But the best hockey player in the world is always in the spotlight, and he hasn’t broken out thanks in large part to Aleksander Barkov and the Panthers defending him tightly.

Christian McCaffrey hopes longer offseason leads to better health in 2025 for 49ers

The biggest beneficiary of an extended offseason for the San Francisco 49ers just might have been star running back Christian McCaffrey. A year after he was limited to just four games because of injuries to his Achilles tendon and knee, the engine of San Francisco’s high-powered offense was on the practice field for the offseason program and is hoping to get back to the form that made him AP Offensive Player of the Year in 2023. A healthy McCaffrey would be a key component for San Francisco to rebound from a 6-11 season.

Red Sox trade Rafael Devers to the Giants in a blockbuster deal

The Boston Red Sox have traded Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants in a blockbuster deal. The Giants sent right-hander Jordan Hicks, lefty Kyle Harrison, outfield prospect James Tibbs III and minor league righty Jose Bello to the Red Sox for the 28-year-old designated hitter, who had bristled at his demotion from third base this year. Devers is one of baseball’s most feared sluggers. He is batting .272 with 15 homers and 58 RBIs in 73 games after he connected for a solo drive in Boston’s 2-0 victory over the New York Yankees.

Dodgers say Shohei Ohtani will pitch on Monday night against Padres

Shohei Ohtani is going to be the starting pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night against San Diego, 21 months after the two-way star had elbow surgery. The Dodgers made the announcement after their 5-4 win over San Francisco. Ohtani likely will be used as an opener as the NL West leaders kick off a four-game set against the visiting Padres. Ohtani has not pitched in a game since Aug. 23, 2023, when he got hurt during a start for the Los Angeles Angels against Cincinnati. He had Tommy John surgery on Oct. 1, 2018, and is recovering from right elbow surgery on Sept. 19, 2023.

US hopes 5-0 win over Trinidad starts upswing after longest losing streak since 2007

The U.S. hopes a blowout win over the world’s 100th-ranked team can start to lessen the pessimism created by the Americans’ longest losing streak since 2007. Malik Tillman scored twice and Diego Luna had a pair of assists in a 5-0 rout of Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday in the Americans’ CONCACAF Gold Cup opener. Victory in the Group D opener came after days of controversy over Christian Pulisic’s desire to rest during the Gold Cup and Pochettino not including the star in a pair of pre-tournament friendlies the attacker offered to play in.

Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Josef Newgarden flipped his car upside down during Sunday night’s race at Gateway outside St. Louis. Newgarden crashed midway through the race after contact with Louis Foster. Foster spun into the wall and shot across the track, stopping directly in Newgarden’s path. The IndyCar safety crew immediately helped Newgarden from his car and he radioed his Team Penske crew he was fine.

Rory McIlroy ends his US Open on a high note with a 67. The next major is in his home country

Rory McIlroy shot a 3-under 67 to finish the U.S. Open at 7 over. That’s a performance he can build off as he works toward the year’s final major. Next month’s British Open at Royal Portrush is in his home country of Northern Ireland. First, McIlroy has the Travelers Championship in Connecticut next week. At times this week, he seemed eager to leave Oakmont behind. But he ended up feeling pretty good about his round Sunday — and the state of his driver.

Hatton, Ortiz and Hovland had a shot at the US Open. Then Oakmont happened

Famed Oakmont bared its teeth on the back nine at the U.S. Open. Tyrrell Hatton, Carlos Ortiz and Viktor Hovland were part of a large group of players who found themselves in the mix during the final round. All three had their issues with the brawny course. Hatton’s chances ended when his drive on the 17th hole got caught up in the rough above a bunker. A wayward drive on the 15th cost Ortiz. Hovland hovered all day but couldn’t make the putts necessary to keep up with winner J.J. Spaun.

MacIntyre was seven strokes back of leader Sam Burns at the beginning of the day. He actually made up 10 shots on Burns but couldn’t outlast Spaun. Texas rookie Kumar Rocker keeps scoreless start intact with help from pickle juice

Texas Rangers rookie Kumar Rocker kept a scoreless start intact by working through an eventful fifth inning that included downing three small bottles of pickle juice, the last of which resulted in a mound visit charged to a ball boy. The 25-year-old right-hander apparently cramped up after striking out White Sox outfielder Michael A. Taylor for the first out of the fifth. First baseman Jake Burger brought two small bottles of pickle juice from the dugout as Rocker chatted with the trainer. Play resumed, and the ball boy soon brought out a third bottle. Umpires charged Texas with a mound visit for that. Rocker eventually got out of the inning and didn’t allow a run over his five frames.

Carlota Ciganda birdied the final two holes to win the Meijer LPGA Classic on Sunday for her first LPGA Tour victory in more than 8 1/2 years, while Lexi Thompson had two late bogeys to dash her bid to end a long drought of her own. Ciganda hit to a foot to set up her birdie on the par-4 17th, then made a 4-foot comebacker on the par-5 18th to avoid a playoff with playing partner Hye-Jin Choi. Ciganda shot a 5-under 67 — her fourth straight round in the 60s — to finish at 16-under 272. The 35-year-old Spanish player won for the first time since the 2016 Lorena Ochoa Invitational. Pacers coach Rick Carlisle offers defense of Scott Foster after referee receives criticism in Game 4

Indiana coach Rick Carlisle offered an impassioned and somewhat unprompted defense of referee Scott Foster on Sunday, evidently aware of the mountains of online criticism that came after Game 4 of the NBA Finals. Foster was one of the three on-court referees assigned to Game 4, which had more fouls called and more free throws awarded than any of the three previous games in the series. Foster — who has long been a lightning rod for critics — did not work any of those first three games.

Pacers and Thunder are set for a pivotal Game 5 in an NBA Finals that has been back and forth

The ratings are down for these NBA Finals, as was expected. Oklahoma City vs. Indiana is a small-market series and the numbers reflect exactly that, with viewership down about 20% from last season and on pace for the poorest TV turnout since the bubble finals in 2020. Don’t blame the Thunder and Pacers for that. It’s been a back-and-forth over the first four games — and now, a best-of-three will decide the NBA title. Game 5 is in Oklahoma City on Monday night, with the Thunder trying to take their first lead of the series and the Pacers trying to head back home one win from a championship.

Jalen Williams keeps bouncing back. The Oklahoma City Thunder’s All-Star forward has suffered through poor shooting stretches in each of the past three playoff series. And each time, he’s recovered to help the Thunder win critical games. After two rough shooting nights to start the Finals series against the Indiana Pacers, he found his stride. In Game 4, Williams handled the ball more and was aggressive. He scored 27 points and made 8 of 18 field goals and 11 of 11 free throws. His success helped the Thunder win 111-104 to even the series at 2-2.

The Club World Cup is finally up and running — and soccer may never be the same

After more than a year of uncertainty and criticism, the Club World Cup kicked off in Miami, and soccer may never be the same. At least that’s what FIFA president Gianni Infantino has been telling anyone who would listen. Soccer’s newest tournament is what the sport has been waiting for, Infantino says, and on Saturday, despite considerable pushback and obstacles, he turned his personal passion project into a reality. The Swiss lawyer who holds one of the most powerful positions in the world as head of soccer’s governing body was on hand at a largely full Hard Rock Stadium to watch Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami draw 0-0 with Egyptian team Al Ahly in the opening game.

Argentina’s eight-time Ballon d’Or winner looked set to provide a stunning finish in front of a crowd of more than 60,000 – whipping a curling long shot towards the top corner in the sixth minute of added time. But he was denied his moment of glory as Al Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed Elshenawy pushed the ball onto the crossbar. Messi also shaved the post with a free kick earlier in the second half.

Following that up has been difficult. McIlroy’s driver was deemed nonconforming before the PGA Championship. The Brewers moved quickly after they announced they were removing Civale from their rotation. The veteran right-hander said Thursday he wanted to remain a starter even if it meant leaving Milwaukee. He was traded one day later, and will be Chicago’s starter Sunday at Texas. Civale is 1-2 with a 4.91 ERA this season. Panthers build and then squander a 3-goal lead against Oilers in Game 4 of Stanley Cup Final

The Florida Panthers were up 3-0 in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Edmonton Oilers. But, they lost. Matthew Tkachuk and the stars of the defending champion Panthers smothered the Oilers in the first period. Edmonton’s veterans responded fiercely — scoring four straight to take a 4-3 lead. After the Panthers forced overtime, Oilers star Leon Draisaitl scored the winner. What initially looked like an easy victory that would put Florida one win away from clinching a second straight Stanley Cup Final turned into a huge collapse that has the series tied 2-2 heading back to Edmonton.

In Charlie Hustle’s day, 110% effort was non-negotiable. In modern baseball, it’s more complicated

There’s no quicker way for a player to earn praise inside the dugout than with a little hustle. On the flip side, the lack of it can land a player in a manager’s doghouse. In this modern era of baseball, where the average salary topped $5 million for the first time this season, the politics of hustle may play a role. It’s a balancing act between going all out — the old-school way — and conserving energy over the course of a long season. Yankees infield Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s recently outlined a theory where going 70% might be the way to cut down on strained obliques and pulled hamstrings.

A golf course with a 6-lane highway? Welcome to the US Open at Oakmont, where I-76 somehow blends in

From an overhead view, the sight is somewhat jarring. The Pennsylvania Turnpike essentially cuts Oakmont’s golf course in half. At ground level, though, the highway is surprisingly unintrusive at this week’s U.S. Open. In fact, it can’t be seen from much of Oakmont’s layout. The biggest reason the roadway blends in when you’re on the course is because there’s an elevation change down to the highway. So the Turnpike presents largely as a gap in the middle of the course. That’s if it’s perceptible at all.

The latest effort by Congress to regulate college sports is generating predictable partisan outrage. Democrats say Republican-led draft legislation would claw back freedoms won by athletes through years of litigation against the NCAA. Three House committees are considering legislation that would create a national standard for name, image and likeness payments to athletes and protect the NCAA against future lawsuits. NCAA President Charlie Baker has said he supports the draft legislation. But there was little indication that any bill advanced by the House would generate enough Democratic support to surpass the 60-vote threshold in the Senate.

Referees at the Club World Cup will wear eye-level cameras to finally allow fans to see exactly what the officials are looking at during a soccer match. Well… not quite. FIFA has announced the innovation will be implemented at its newly-expanded tournament, which kicks off in Miami on Saturday. But on closer inspection, the technology appears to be more about improving the experience for television viewers than improving the game. For instance, only “non-controversial” images will be shown during the match and while FIFA has not specified what that means, it is likely to include goal-scoring incidents and potential red cards.

In attempting to keep the focus on football, Allen had little to say about this wedding day. He finally opened up when assessing a four-month stretch that included him being named NFL MVP and signing a lucrative contract extension. He called Steinfeld his best friend, and said she makes everything easier.

Aaron Rodgers is off the free agent and dating markets. Steelers QB says he recently got married

Aaron Rodgers added another ring to his collection before he even signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The four-time NFL MVP quarterback and Super Bowl champion said Tuesday after his first practice with the Steelers that he got married “a couple months ago.” Rodgers wore a wedding ring when he signed with the Steelers and again during drills on Tuesday. Rodgers has revealed little about his bride. During an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” last fall, he mentioned he was dating a woman named Brittani but offered no other details.

Scottie Scheffler is primed for another tough major at the US Open

Scottie Scheffler has been such a big favorite in golf that he had to get rid of his Venmo account. Turns out he was getting requests from fans who either paid him a few bucks for their betting wins or were asking for refunds. Scheffler is the overwhelming favorite again at the U.S. Open for good reason. He’s coming off three wins in his last four tournaments by a combined 17 shots. And he has the kind of tee-to-green dominance that works well at a U.S. Open test like Oakmont. Scheffler doesn’t care about odds. He says everyone starts even on Thursday.

Aaron Rodgers says his decision to play in Pittsburgh this season was ‘best for my soul’

Aaron Rodgers says his decision to play for the Pittsburgh Steelers is centered on his love for the game. The four-time NFL MVP signed a one-year deal to join the Steelers earlier this month and joined his new teammates on the field for the opening day of minicamp. The 41-year-old Rodgers spent most of his time getting to know his surroundings, but head coach Mike Tomlin said Rodgers is the team’s starting quarterback. Rodgers said the decision to come back for a 21st season was not driven by ego but what was best for his soul.

UNC receiver Jordan Shipp described his first reaction to Belichick’s hiring as realizing the man he called the “greatest coach of all time” was about to be his coach. Shipp and defensive back Will Hardy said Belichick’s sense of humor caught them off guard amid his all-business demeanor.

Micah Parsons shows up for minicamp with Cowboys, has lengthy chat with Jerry Jones

Micah Parsons has shown up for mandatory minicamp with the Dallas Cowboys. He had about a 30-minute conversation with owner Jerry Jones on the practice field while his teammates were going through drills. The two-time All-Pro edge rusher says none of the conversation with Jones was about the contract extension Parsons hopes to sign soon. Parsons is going into the final year of his rookie contract. Parsons’ presence wasn’t constant during the voluntary portion of the offseason. But he says he has no plans to skip mandatory sessions, including at training camp in California next month.

Oilers’ penalty woes and composure issues lead to blowout loss and put them in precarious spot

The Edmonton Oilers took the ice for practice the day after the wheels came off in a 6-1 loss to the Florida Panthers in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final. They were eager to put their worst showing since very early in the playoffs behind them. They trail the series 2-1 with the defending champions another win away from moving to the verge of going back to back. Penalty trouble was the primary culprit long before the game got out of hand, and goaltender Stuart Skinner’s play is just one of the reasons for concern.

Buffalo Bills running back James Cook put aside his contract concerns — and avoided the potential of being fined — by attending the start of the team’s three-day mandatory series of practices. Coach Sean McDermott says “I respect his decision to be here and be amongst the team.” Cook’s attendance comes after he went public with his desire to negotiate a contract extension while entering the fourth and final year of his rookie deal. Cook skipped Buffalo’s six previous spring practices and workout sessions, all of which were voluntary. Cook was selected by Buffalo in the second round of the 2022 draft out of Georgia.

Dustin Johnson is back at Oakmont and relishing memories. He won his first major in the 2016 U.S. Open under extreme conditions. That sent him on his way to being the best player in the world. Now he is with LIV Golf, and he is becoming an afterthought. Over the last 16 months, he has no wins. He has missed the cut in five of his last seven majors. Johnson says he can see himself playing six more years. He says he’s willing to grind that much longer. But he’ll be out of the majors except the Masters after 2026.

He confirmed the occurrence of internal discussions, but wouldn’t say want those conversations entailed. But he says he has made progress on returning from offseason knee surgery and plans to get full medical clearance in time for the start of training camp in late July.

NBA Finals are shifting to Indianapolis, with the Pacers and Thunder tied 1-1 going into Game 3

The Oklahoma City Thunder showed their bounce-back capability in Game 2. The Indiana Pacers know they better do the same in Game 3. The NBA Finals resume Wednesday night with the series tied at a game apiece, the matchup shifting to Indianapolis for what will be the first finals game in that city in 25 years. And the Pacers know it’s on them to respond after Game 2 wasn’t much of a contest. It’s obviously possible: The Pacers haven’t lost back-to-back games in three months, going 9-0 after losses in that span. This would be a good time for them to extend that run.

The four-time All-Pro and 2021 AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year signed a four-year extension in September 2021 that was scheduled to pay him $112 million and made him the highest-paid defender in the league at the time. Cleveland defensive end Myles Garrett now holds that honor after signing a deal worth $40 million a season in March.

Heading into the U.S. Open this week, Rory McIlroy has been disabused of any notion that life once he completed the career Grand Slam with that win at the Masters would be smooth sailing. McIlroy conceded he’s had some trouble finding motivation after conquering his biggest goal. The results have showed. He finished 47th at the PGA Championship last month and missed the cut at the Canadian Open last week. NCAA says online abuse related to sports betting declined during this year’s March Madness

Online abuse related to sports betting decreased during the NCAA’s March Madness basketball tournaments compared with the prior year. But the NCAA says people involved in the competition still received more than 3,000 threatening messages. The NCAA hired Signify Group to monitor messages directed at athletes, coaches, game officials, selection committee members and others with official roles in the tournament. Signify used both artificial intelligence and human analysts to confirm the threats and, when necessary, report them to law enforcement. Overall, the NCAA says abuse related to sports betting was down 23%. Both the men’s and women’s tournaments had relatively few major upsets.

Brad Marchand embraces Panthers’ rat-throwing tradition, which goes back 30 years

There’s a giant, gold-outlined rat emblazoned on the hat that dangles in Brad Marchand’s locker. The scrappy NHL veteran has been likened to the tiny rodent for much of his career, notoriously known as “The Rat” among hockey fans. So when Marchand was traded from Boston to Florida back in March, it didn’t take long for him to embrace Panthers fans’ tradition of tossing plastic rats onto the ice after wins. After the Panthers routed the Edmonton Oilers 6-1 on Monday in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final, rats rained down in a tradition that has last lasted 30 years.

He extended the upper half of his body several feet beyond the wall and made a backhand grab. Clarke has made several terrific catches since he debuted on May 23.

Schauffele says he looks forward to the challenge at Oakmont. He’s yet to win the U.S. Open but he has finished in the top 10 in all but one of his eight appearances.
