Even though Florida has retained a search firm to help land the school’s next football coach, athletic director Scott Stricklin says he will have final say in the hiring process. And he won’t be in a rush to get it done. Thanks to new NCAA legislation, teams that fire head coaches during the season no longer trigger an open window for players to enter the transfer portal. So the Gators have weeks, maybe even months, to find Billy Napier’s replacement. Stricklin says “time is an asset.” Tweaked rules allow Stricklin to wait for other coaches to finish their regular seasons or even potentially exit the College Football Playoff.

Raleek Brown bulled in for a 1-yard touchdown with 34 seconds left and Arizona State rallied after blowing a 12-point fourth-quarter lead to hand No. 7 Texas Tech its first loss of the season, 26-22. The Red Raiders labored most of the afternoon without starting quarterback Behren Morton (knee), finishing with 276 total yards after averaging an FBS-best 558.8 through the first six games. Will Hammond showed his mettle after failing to move Texas Tech’s offense through three quarters, orchestrating two late scoring drives. The freshman scored on a 1-yard run and, after Texas Tech’s defense held, found Reggie Virgil on a 12-yard touchdown pass. Arizona State answered behind Sam Leavitt, who it 5 of 7 passes for 61 yards to set up Brown’s TD run.

James Franklin says he was shocked when Penn State fired him hours after a loss in which the Nittany Lions also lost quarterback Drew Allar to a season-ending injury but that he cannot wait to coach again elsewhere. Franklin said Saturday on ESPN’s “College GameDay” that Penn State athletic director Pat Kraft visited him ahead of a practice last Sunday and told him the university was making a change. Franklin said he was surprised because Penn State was fighting to play for a national title six games ago and was a two-minute drive away from beating Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl last season. Miami’s perfect season hopes are dashed as Beck throws 4 interceptions in loss to Louisville

Carson Beck and the Miami Hurricanes are dealing with a loss for the first time. Miami’s hopes for a perfect season vanished Friday night when it lost 24-21 to Louisville. Beck, who had never thrown four interceptions in a college game, took the blame. He became the first Miami quarterback in 12 years to be intercepted four times. Despite completing 71.4% of his passes for 271 yards, those interceptions proved costly. Louisville didn’t score off Beck’s mistakes, but Miami couldn’t overcome the wasted drives. Coach Mario Cristobal emphasized learning from the loss. Beck remains optimistic, noting there are six more games to play this season.

Brewers outclassed by Ohtani and big-money Dodgers as rousing season ends with NLCS sweep

Turned out the National League Championship Series was indeed a mismatch, just as Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy suggested. But not only in payroll and star power. On the baseball field, too. Where it really matters. After compiling the best record in the majors during the regular season, the scrappy Brewers appeared capable of beating anybody — until they ran into Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Milwaukee mustered only four runs and 14 hits in a four-game Dodgers sweep that left the Brewers steps short of the World Series once again. The team’s only pennant came in 1982, when Milwaukee was in the American League.

This has led to more high-profile matchups between top programs before the season officially starts. The games provide a chance to test chemistry with rosters being overhauled every season because of transfers. Trump threatens to yank World Cup games from Boston though it’s up to FIFA to choose sites

President Donald Trump is threatening to relocate World Cup matches set to be played next year in suburban Boston. He suggested Tuesday that parts of the city had been “taken over” by unrest. The city is set to stage seven matches as the U.S. cohosts the 2026 World Cup with Mexico and Canada. It wasn’t immediately clear what unrest Trump was referring to, but earlier this month there were multiple arrests in connection with a pro-Palestinian protest that turned violent on Boston Common. World Cup host sites aren’t up to Trump but are contracted with FIFA, which would face significant logistical and legal issues if it made changes now.
