Patriots receiver Stefon Diggs keeping his discussions with team about viral boat video private

New England Patriots receiver Stefon Diggs is declining to share specifics about his conversations with coach Mike Vrabel and the team in the aftermath of a viral video that showed him passing what appeared to be a bag of pink crystals to women on a boat last month. He confirmed the occurrence of internal discussions, but wouldn’t say want those conversations entailed. But he says he has made progress on returning from offseason knee surgery and plans to get full medical clearance in time for the start of training camp in late July.

NBA Finals are shifting to Indianapolis, with the Pacers and Thunder tied 1-1 going into Game 3

The Oklahoma City Thunder showed their bounce-back capability in Game 2. The Indiana Pacers know they better do the same in Game 3. The NBA Finals resume Wednesday night with the series tied at a game apiece, the matchup shifting to Indianapolis for what will be the first finals game in that city in 25 years. And the Pacers know it’s on them to respond after Game 2 wasn’t much of a contest. It’s obviously possible: The Pacers haven’t lost back-to-back games in three months, going 9-0 after losses in that span. This would be a good time for them to extend that run.

Steelers star linebacker TJ Watt skips the start of mandatory minicamp

Aaron Rodgers is ready to take the practice field for the Pittsburgh Steelers. T.J. Watt is not. The star outside linebacker is skipping the start of mandatory minicamp. Watt likely is eyeing a new deal as he enters the final year of his current contract. The four-time All-Pro and 2021 AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year signed a four-year extension in September 2021 that was scheduled to pay him $112 million and made him the highest-paid defender in the league at the time. Cleveland defensive end Myles Garrett now holds that honor after signing a deal worth $40 million a season in March.

Deion Sanders hasn’t attended football camps in Boulder, Colorado, this spring. The University of Colorado said it couldn’t comment on a reason for his absence. ESPN, citing a source it did not name, said Sanders has been ill and out of the office recently. Over the weekend, his son Deion Sanders Jr. posted a livestream video on YouTube in which he said his father remains at his Texas home and “feeling well,” according to USA Today. Sanders has struggled with his left foot since having two toes amputated in 2021 because of blood clot issues while at Jackson State.

Heading into the U.S. Open this week, Rory McIlroy has been disabused of any notion that life once he completed the career Grand Slam with that win at the Masters would be smooth sailing. McIlroy conceded he’s had some trouble finding motivation after conquering his biggest goal. The results have showed. He finished 47th at the PGA Championship last month and missed the cut at the Canadian Open last week. In the meantime, he’s had to adjust to a new driver after the old one was declared nonconforming in a routine test before the PGA.

NCAA says online abuse related to sports betting declined during this year’s March Madness

Online abuse related to sports betting decreased during the NCAA’s March Madness basketball tournaments compared with the prior year. But the NCAA says people involved in the competition still received more than 3,000 threatening messages. The NCAA hired Signify Group to monitor messages directed at athletes, coaches, game officials, selection committee members and others with official roles in the tournament. Signify used both artificial intelligence and human analysts to confirm the threats and, when necessary, report them to law enforcement. Overall, the NCAA says abuse related to sports betting was down 23%. Both the men’s and women’s tournaments had relatively few major upsets.

Brad Marchand embraces Panthers’ rat-throwing tradition, which goes back 30 years

There’s a giant, gold-outlined rat emblazoned on the hat that dangles in Brad Marchand’s locker. The scrappy NHL veteran has been likened to the tiny rodent for much of his career, notoriously known as “The Rat” among hockey fans. So when Marchand was traded from Boston to Florida back in March, it didn’t take long for him to embrace Panthers fans’ tradition of tossing plastic rats onto the ice after wins. After the Panthers routed the Edmonton Oilers 6-1 on Monday in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final, rats rained down in a tradition that has last lasted 30 years.

Rookie center fielder Denzel Clarke made yet another spectacular catch for the Athletics, this time reaching high above the wall to rob the Los Angeles Angels’ Nolan Schanuel of a home run. The Angels had one out and no one on in the bottom of the first when Schanuel launched a 1-0 splitter from Grant Holman toward left-center. Clarke raced back and planted his right foot about halfway up the wall in a perfectly timed leap and grabbed the top for support. He extended the upper half of his body several feet beyond the wall and made a backhand grab. Clarke has made several terrific catches since he debuted on May 23.

Nashville grows from ‘not a soccer city’ to hosting Club World Cup matches

Soccer fans in Music City once numbered so few that someone could recognize a car’s driver by the bumper sticker. Now? Don’t wave. Odds are that’s a stranger. Soccer has grown by leaps and bounds from the immigrants who played at a park decades ago through semi-pro ball to teams drawing only a diehard fans. That thirst for soccer helped Nashville go from an outside chance at a Major League Soccer expansion franchise to drawing the biggest crowd to see a match in the state of Tennessee in February 2020. Now Nashville SC will be hosting Club World Cup games at GEODIS Park in June.

The Boston Red Sox called up top prospect Roman Anthony two days after the 21-year-old outfielder hit a 497-foot grand slam for Triple-A Worcester. A second-round pick in the 2022 amateur draft, Anthony batted .288 with 10 homers and 29 RBIs in 58 games in Triple-A this season. He was 0-for-4 on Monday night in his major league debut with a walk and an RBI groundout. He also committed an error in right field.

T.J. Oshie, US Olympic star in Sochi and Capitals Stanley Cup champion, announces he’s retiring

T.J. Oshie, who scored four shootout goals for the U.S. to beat host Russia at the 2014 Sochi Olympics and helped the Washington Capitals win the Stanley Cup in 2018, announced Monday he is retiring after playing 16 NHL seasons. Oshie shared his news in front of hundreds of fans gathered at the fountains at Washington Harbour in Georgetown, seven years to the day of one of the most memorable Cup celebrations in hockey history when he and several teammates jumped into the fountains and took a dip. President of hockey operations Brian MacLellan, general manager Chris Patrick, coach Spencer Carbery and longtime teammates Nicklas Backstrom and John Carlson came out to support Oshie as he called it a career.

Oakmont figures to give everyone fits this week because of its dense rough and super slick greens. Justin Thomas says having a good attitude to him means concentrating over every single shot.

World Cup host city organizers acknowledge immigration crackdown may impact next year’s tournament

Philadelphia’s host city executive for the 2026 World Cup says organizers accept that an immigration crackdown by the U.S. federal government may be among the outside events that impact next year’s tournament. At a gathering of the 11 U.S. host city leaders on Monday, Meg Kane said, “We do not play a role necessarily in what is happening in terms of the decisions that are made.” The World Cup will be played at 16 stadiums in the U.S., Mexico and Canada from June 11 to July 19 next year, a tournament expanded to 48 nations and 104 games.

Snake eyes: D-backs’ $425 million investment in starting pitching hasn’t gone as planned

The normally budget-conscious Arizona Diamondbacks have been willing to spend big money over the past several years, taking chances on the notoriously volatile market of free agent starting pitching. So far, it’s come up snake eyes. Over the past 5 1/2 years, Diamondbacks owner Ken Kendrick has committed roughly $425 million to four pitchers — Corbin Burnes, Jordan Montgomery, Eduardo Rodríguez and Madison Bumgarner. The combined return on that investment has been a 30-48 record, 5.25 ERA, minus-0.4 WAR and two Tommy John surgeries.

Matt Vogt is trading a drill for a driver at the U.S. Open. The 34-year-old Vogt, who runs a dental practice near Indianapolis, qualified as an amateur for the 156-man field. Vogt grew up north of Pittsburgh and caddied for a few years at Oakmont, which is hosting the national championship for the 10th time. Vogt played briefly in college before focusing on dentistry. He returned to the game in 2018 and qualified for this year’s Open two months after losing his father to colon cancer. Vogt says he’s going to try to enjoy the moment and plans to be back in his office next week.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander got some much-needed assistance from his teammates in Game 2 of the NBA Finals, and the Oklahoma City Thunder evened the series against the Indiana Pacers with a 123-107 victory. After scoring 38 points in Game 1, Gilgeous-Alexander had 34 points and eight assists in Game 2 — typical performances from the league’s MVP and scoring champion. Co-stars Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren played more like their usual selves on Sunday. Veteran reserve Alex Caruso had another strong performance and Aaron Wiggins provided a surprise boost in Oklahoma City’s first Finals win since 2012.

Pacers fail to sweep Games 1 and 2 in a series for the first time in these playoffs

For the Indiana Pacers, a chance at being perfect in Games 1 and 2 of these playoffs went awry. They’ll have to settle for a mere split of the opening two games in the NBA Finals instead. The Pacers’ bid to become the fifth team in NBA history to go 8-0 to open the four playoff rounds — sweeping Games 1 and 2 in all four series — was stopped on Sunday night by the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Thunder took control early and won Game 2 of the NBA Finals 123-107, tying the championship matchup at a game apiece.

Carlos Narváez put Boston ahead with a three-run homer against his former team, and the Red Sox overcame two home runs by Aaron Judge in an 11-7 victory over the New York Yankees. Rafael Devers also went deep as Boston equaled a season high with five longballs to take two of three games at Yankee Stadium in the first series this season between the longtime rivals. Narváez signed with the Yankees in 2015 and broke into the big leagues with them last year, getting into six games before New York traded him to Boston in December. The rookie catcher gave the Red Sox a 5-3 lead in the sixth inning by lifting a fastball from Carlos Rodón into the left-field seats.

U.S. Open week is off to a soggy start at Oakmont. Players are starting to arrive equipped with umbrellas and expectations of a typical tough test. Jordan Spieth was among the early arrivals. He played the front nine Saturday and got in 11 holes Sunday. The rough is every bit as deep and thick as advertised. Spieth says it’s one of the few U.S. Open courses that doesn’t need a lot of work to be ready for a major. He says mistakes are bound to happen. The key to Oakmont is not to compound the mistakes.

Don Nelson has been invited to the NBA Finals countless times in recent years, always declining those opportunities. This time, his peers found a way to ensure he couldn’t say no. Nelson — a Basketball Hall of Famer and three-time NBA coach of the year — was announced Sunday as this year’s recipient of the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by the National Basketball Coaches Association. Denny Hamlin outlasted the competition at Michigan, winning his third NASCAR Cup Series race this season and the 57th of his career. Hamlin went low to pass William Byron on the 197th of 200 laps and pulled away from the pack  in the No. 11 Toyota. The 44-year-old was prepared to leave to join his fiancée, Jordan Fish, who is due to give birth to their third child, a boy. Hamlin said he would skip next week’s race in Mexico City if necessary to witness the birth. Chris Buescher finished second, followed by Ty Gibbs, Bubba Wallace and Kyle Larson.

Panthers-Oilers Stanley Cup Final is as tight as can be. Game 3 could tilt the series

The second consecutive Stanley Cup Final between the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers has been about as even as a series can get through two games, with each winning one in overtime. The Panthers have led for more time, the Oilers have gotten more shots on net and a bounce or two here or there could have changed the complexion of where these teams are at. Former NFL player Kelvin Joseph facing charges after crash that killed motorcyclist

Former NFL player Kelvin Joseph is facing charges for his involvement in a crash that killed a female motorcyclist on a Dallas-area freeway, The Dallas Morning News reported. Police in the Dallas suburb of Richardson said on social media that Joseph, who has been playing in the United Football League this spring, called police in Plano, another Dallas suburb, to report his involvement in the predawn crash Saturday. The 25-year-old Joseph, who was driving a BMW, was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, and collision involving personal injury or death, a second-degree felony. Police said 27-year-old Cody Morris of Plano was killed. Joseph was drafted by the Cowboys in 2021 and spent two seasons with them before he was traded to Miami.

Phillies place Bryce Harper on injured list with wrist inflammation, no timetable for return

The scuffling Philadelphia Phillies suffered a blow when they placed first baseman Bryce Harper on the 10-day injured list because of right wrist inflammation before their game losing to the Pirates. Harper sat out Friday night’s 5-4 loss to the Pirates. There is no timetable for his return. The two-time National League MVP and eight-time All-Star is hitting .258 with nine home runs and 34 RBIs in 57 games. The Phillies are expected to play third baseman Alec Bohm at first while Harper is out, with utility player Edmundo Sosa taking over at third.

Seattle man charged with string of burglaries at the homes of NFL and MLB stars

A Seattle man has been charged with a string of burglaries at the homes of prominent current and former football and baseball players, marking the latest example of well-known athletes being targeted in these types of thefts. The King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office says 21-year-old Earl Henderson Riley IV was charged Friday with several counts of residential burglary in both occupied and unoccupied homes, along with first-degree robbery. It was not immediately clear whether he has a lawyer. Prosecutors say Riley was the ringleader in a series of burglaries that started in February and involved thefts from the homes of such players as Seattle Mariners Luis Castillo and Julio Rodriguez and former Seattle Seahawk Richard Sherman.

The Thunder fell apart late, then Tyrese Haliburton hit a mid-range dagger that gave Indiana a 111-110 victory. The homecourt advantage Oklahoma City fought all season to gain vanished in a game it dominated for three quarters.

With her college gymnastics days behind her, influencer and Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Livvy Dunne is moving on with life — but that doesn’t mean she’ll be far from the public eye. Dunne has more than 13 million followers on social media, and she created a multimillion-dollar personal brand while competing as a gymnast at LSU. Now she’s trying to help other female athletes do the same, helping to educate them about name, image and likeness deals and personal branding. Asked about her future, Dunne told The Associated Press, “What’s next? Everything.”

Bruins name ex-forward Marco Sturm as head coach after missing playoffs for first time since 2016

The Boston Bruins have hired Marco Sturm as coach to help the Original Six franchise get back to the playoffs after missing them for the first time since 2016. The Bruins picked Sturm to replace interim coach Joe Sacco, who took over from the fired Jim Montgomery in November and led the team to a 25-30-7 record — much of it after a trade deadline roster purge. Sturm becomes the 30th head coach in Bruins history after spending the past three seasons as head coach of the AHL’s Ontario Reign.

White Sox reach agreement for potential future sale of controlling interest to Justin Ishbia

The Chicago White Sox have reached an agreement that will give Justin Ishbia, the brother of Phoenix Suns owner Mat Ishbia, the chance to buy a future controlling interest in the club. The team made the announcement Thursday, adding that Ishbia will make capital infusions into the White Sox as a limited partner in 2025 and 2026, which will be used to pay down existing debt and support ongoing team operations. Ishbia was already a limited partner. His brother Mat and father Jeff Ishbia will also be “significant investors,” the team said. Under the agreement, White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf will have the option to sell controlling interest in the team to Ishbia from 2029-33. After the 2034 season, Ishbia can acquire the controlling interest.

Mets’ Francisco Lindor sits vs Dodgers with broken toe, not headed to the injured list just yet

Francisco Lindor is not immediately headed to the injured list after his toe was broken by a pitch in the New York Mets’ game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Lindor wasn’t available to play for the Mets on Thursday, but manager Carlos Mendoza called him day-to-day. Lindor told reporters that he will continue to play if he can manage the pain this weekend against Colorado. Lindor’s right pinky toe was broken by a pitch from right-hander Tony Gonsolin in the first inning of the third game of the Mets’ four-game series at Dodger Stadium. Lindor played the rest of the game.

The Diamondbacks scored three runs against Scott Blewett and four more against struggling Braves closer Raisel Iglesias. Arizona has won four straight to get to .500 at 31-31.

Colts QB Anthony Richardson is sidelined indefinitely with a right shoulder injury

Indianapolis Colts coach Shane Steichen says quarterback Anthony Richardson has a shoulder injury that will sideline him indefinitely. Richardson aggravated the AC joint in his throwing shoulder, which he had season-ending surgery on in October 2023, his rookie season. The third-year quarterback reported soreness in his right shoulder during last week’s organized team activities and hasn’t practiced since. He will miss next week’s three-day mandatory minicamp. Steichen did not clarify if Richardson will be available for training camp later this summer but said he did not need surgery at this point.

‘The heat got to us:’ Giants’ practice ends with a fight as players push, shove and throw punches

The New York Giants went from running plays to squaring off, ready to rumble in the middle of the field. Punches were thrown and helmets and players tossed aside. And they haven’t even made it to minicamp yet. Edge rusher Brian Burns said the heat got to the players Thursday after the Giants’ sixth practice of organized team activities. First, Burns and left tackle James Hudson took off their helmets and squared up as if they were going to fight. On the next play, edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux and offensive tackle Jermaine Eluemunor got into it and Thibodeaux took a swing at his teammate. A few players ended up on the ground.

Federal judges rule in favor of NASCAR in lawsuit filed by Jordan-owned 23XI and Front Row

A three-judge federal appellate panel has ruled in favor of NASCAR in the antitrust lawsuit filed by two teams, one owned by Michael Jordan. The judges at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in Richmond, Virginia, on Thursday vacated an injunction that required 23XI and Front Row be recognized as chartered teams as their case snakes through the legal system. Both race teams sued NASCAR late last year after refusing to sign new agreements on charter renewals. Jordan owns 23XI. The charter system is similar to franchises in other sports, but the charters are revocable by NASCAR.

This time, they had just reached the Eastern Conference finals for the first time in 25 years before losing to Rick Carlisle’s Pacers, and were an early favorite to do it again next year. Penguins hire Rangers assistant Dan Muse to replace Mike Sullivan as coach

Dan Muse is the new head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Penguins hired the former New York Rangers assistant and tasked him with helping the franchise navigate a rebuild during the twilight of longtime captain Sidney Crosby’s career. Muse replaces Mike Sullivan. Sullivan and the Penguins split in April after a nearly decade-long tenure that included a pair of Stanley Cup titles. The Rangers scooped up Sullivan, naming him their coach in May. The 42-year-old Muse was hired after a monthlong search by Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas. Muse’s hiring leaves the Boston Bruins as the last of eight teams with offseason head coaching vacancies.

Shedeur Sanders had the best throw of the day during organized team activities with the Cleveland Browns on Wednesday. He zipped a pinpoint pass to tight end Caden Davis in the back of the end zone during a 7-on-7 red-zone drill. Whether or not Davis got both feet in before going out of bounds was up for debate on social media. However, Sanders was the only one of Cleveland’s four quarterbacks not to take a snap with the first-team offense during 11-on-11 drills. He did take second-team snaps, but slipped and fell on the first play.

The NBA is working on a plan to turn next season’s All-Star Game into a U.S.-vs.-world competition. That’s according to a person with knowledge of the situation who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the league has not made any final determinations. Speaking to FS1 earlier Wednesday, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver was asked if U.S. vs. the world was possible, and he said, “Yes.” Silver has talked about such a game on several occasions. International players have spoken enthusiastically about the possible format. The NHL had success with countries competing against each other at the 4 Nations Face-off.

Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen has signed into law a measure banning transgender athletes from girls’ sports. Republicans behind the effort say it protects women and their ability to fairly compete in sports. Opponents say with so few transgender students seeking to participate in sports, the measure is a solution in search of a problem. At least 24 other states have adopted similar bans. President Donald Trump also signed an executive order this year intended to dictate which sports competitions transgender athletes can enter and has battled in court with Maine over that state’s allowing transgender athletes in girls’ and women’s sports.

Suns hire Cavaliers assistant Jordan Ott as head coach, AP source says

The Phoenix Suns have hired Cleveland Cavaliers assistant Jordan Ott as their head coach, opting for a young, emerging leader to rebuild a franchise that has regressed over the past few seasons. That’s according to a person familiar with the search who spoke Wednesday to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the hire hasn’t officially been announced. Ott will be the team’s fourth head coach in four seasons and replaces Mike Budenholzer, who was fired following a miserable 36-46 season. The struggling Colorado Rockies have ended their ignominious, record-setting streak of 22 consecutive series losses, which dated to last season. A nervy 3-2 victory at Miami on Tuesday night, highlighted by Hunter Goodman’s third home run in two games, gave Colorado two straight victories over the Marlins. That ensures the Rockies will leave town with their first series victory since taking two of three games from Arizona in Denver in mid-September. Colorado is a major league-worst 11-50. They won consecutive games for just the second time this year after beating Atlanta on April 30 and San Francisco the next day. Before the Rockies arrived in Miami, they’d gone 3-28 on the road.

The New York Mets have called up prized infield prospect Ronny Mauricio from the minors. The promotion comes after third baseman Mark Vientos strained his right hamstring late in Monday night’s victory over the Dodgers in Los Angeles. Vientos went on the 10-day injured list Tuesday. Mauricio made his major league debut in September 2023 and batted .248 with two home runs, nine RBIs and seven stolen bases in 26 games that year. But months later, the switch-hitter tore a knee ligament playing winter ball in the Dominican Republic and he missed the 2024 season.

The comeback starts July 19, when Pacquiao returns from a four-year layoff and attempts to break his own record by becoming the oldest welterweight champion in boxing history. Massachusetts high school volleyball team rallies around teammate detained by immigration agents

A high school volleyball team in Massachusetts is asking fans to wear white to their next match to show support for a teammate who has been detained by federal immigration authorities. Marcelo Gomes da Silva, an 18-year-old junior at Milford High School who was born in Brazil, was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents Saturday on his way to volleyball practice. Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons said Monday that agents were looking for the teenager’s father, who owns the car Gomes da Silva was driving at the time. A federal judge on Monday gave the government two weeks to respond to the teen’s request to be released while his immigration case proceeds.

Vikings’ Purple People Eater Jim Marshall, the ‘all-time iron man,’ dies at 87

Former Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jim Marshall has died after a long hospitalization for an undisclosed illness. He was 87. Marshall was one of the four members of the famed Purple People Eaters front that formed the backbone of four Super Bowl teams. The Vikings announced Marshall’s death Tuesday on behalf of his wife, Susan. He played 19 of his 20 seasons in the NFL with Minnesota. The two-time Pro Bowl pick set a league record for position players with 282 consecutive games played. That mark was held by Marshall until Brett Favre broke it with the Vikings in 2010.

Connecticut man gets 33 years in prison for stray-bullet killing of Olympian’s mother

A Connecticut man has been sentenced to 33 years in prison for the stray-bullet killing of a Puerto Rican Olympic athlete’s mother. Jasper Greene of New Haven was one of three men charged in the death of Mabel Martinez Antongiorgi on April 9, 2022. The 56-year-old woman was sewing in her home in Waterbury when a bullet flew through a wall and hit her in the head. Martinez Antongiorgi’s daughter, Yarimar Mercado Martinez, competed for the family’s native Puerto Rico at the Olympics in 2016, 2021 and 2024. Greene was sentenced Tuesday. A message was left with his lawyer.

Whether ratings are good or not, Thunder-Pacers could be a series true basketball fans enjoy

It’s No. 25 Indiana vs. No. 47 Oklahoma City in the NBA Finals. That’s not their seeding. That’s their media market ranking. To some, that might matter. A title matchup that starts Thursday night between the Pacers and Thunder has two young, fun teams that score a ton and are led by marketable stars. That the good news. Here’s the inevitable other side: The ratings, especially at the start of the series, probably aren’t going to be good because the home markets are so small. Those who like the NBA won’t be dissuaded by that. Those who don’t like the NBA will tout it as great failure.
