Jaxson Dart impressing in the preseason has not changed the Giants’ plan at quarterback

New York Giants rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart completed 13 consecutive passes and was 14 of 16 in his second NFL preseason game. Two impressive showings to open exhibition play should have the organization and fans excited about his long-term future. But they have done nothing to change the plan for developing Dart after trading up to draft him in the first round and keeping veteran Russell Wilson firmly implanted as the starter. Brian Daboll insists there’s a roadmap in place that the Giants are sticking to, even if the offensive-minded coach isn’t exactly being forthright about what it entails.

MLB-best Brewers rally again, set franchise single-season record for consecutive victories with 14

The Milwaukee Brewers set a single-season franchise record with their 14th straight victory Saturday. And, in keeping with recent form, it wasn’t easy. The MLB-leading Brewers rallied for the second straight game and beat the Cincinnati Reds 6-5 in 11 innings. This Milwaukee club set a new benchmark — so far — for consecutive victories, surpassing the 1987 team that opened that season by winning its first 13 games. The Brewers will look to add to their streak in the series finale on Sunday. Milwaukee’s overall record for consecutive wins is 16 games, from 1986-87, when they won their last three games in 1986 and their first 13 in 1987.

McLaurin is entering the final year of a three-year, $68.2 million contract signed in 2022. Quinn said he doubted McLaurin would play in either of Washington’s remaining preseason games.

The 32-year-old Bridgewater still keeps in touch with the high school team but is also happy to be in Tampa Bay, where he brings a veteran presence to a quarterback room led by Baker Mayfield.

It took a lot for Venezuela to the Little League World Series, but on Wednesday it made the playing baseball part look easy. Cardenales Little League from Barquisimeto shut out Puerto Rico 5-0. Cardenales won all five of its regional tournament games, outscoring opponents 46-6 to become the Latin America representative to the LLWS. But in the wake of President Donald Trump’s travel bans and restrictions affecting 19 countries, the team needed a special exemption from the U.S. State Department and a sign-off from Secretary of State Marco Rubio after visas were initially denied. Venezuela’s senior team, players who are up to 16, which was supposed to compete in South Carolina, last month was unable to get the exemption and was denied entry to the U.S.

There was so much faux outrage over Rory McIlroy missing the first PGA Tour postseason event. He wasn’t the first to skip it. And he didn’t even drop in the FedEx Cup. It should be a reminder that golf is not like other sports. There is no defining end to the season like a Super Bowl or a World Series. The PGA Tour originally called the postseason a “championship series” but then went to “playoffs” and it makes no sense. But what it created was incentive for the best to keep playing after the majors. That still works, even without McIlroy.

Brewers claim 10th straight game and become 1st team since 2019 with 2 double-digit win streaks

The Milwaukee Brewers became the first MLB team since 2019 with multiple winning streaks of 10 or more games. However, any excitement over that particular accomplishment is tempered by the bigger picture. The Brewers extended their current win streak to 10 with a 7-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Earlier in the season, Milwaukee won 11 straight, and with Monday’s victory join the Houston Astros (2019), Los Angeles Dodgers (2017), Toronto Blue Jays (2015), Atlanta Braves (2013), St. Louis Cardinals (2001), Pittsburgh Pirates (1978), Kansas City Royals (1977), New York Mets (1969) and Houston Astros (1969) as the only teams to have two double-digit wins streaks since MLB expanded in 1969,

Nevada court apparently clears way for former Raiders coach Jon Gruden to sue NFL over emails

A Nevada court has apparently cleared the way for a 2021 lawsuit filed by former Las Vegas Raiders coach Jon Gruden to proceed against Commissioner Roger Goodell and the NFL. Gruden’s lawsuit alleges that a “malicious and orchestrated campaign” was used to destroy his career by leaking old emails he had sent that included racist, misogynistic and homophobic comments. In 2022, the NFL appealed to Nevada’s high court after a Las Vegas judge rejected league bids to dismiss Gruden’s claim outright or to order out-of-court talks that could be overseen by Goodell. The Nevada Supreme Court ruled that the NFL’s arbitration clause does not apply to Gruden.

Deion Sanders keeps Colorado’s starting QB a well-guarded secret ahead of season opener

Deion Sanders has a quarterback dilemma at Colorado and he isn’t rushing to solve it. His primary options are 17-year-old phenom Julian “JuJu” Lewis, a pure passer, or to lean on the experience of Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter. Sanders might even rotate both. With Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter in the NFL, this will be a new-look offense for the Buffaloes. The QB competition is friendly, with both players embracing the challenge. To help improve the running game, the Buffaloes added Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk as a coach. Colorado opens the season Aug. 29 by hosting Georgia Tech.

Frederick Richard is challenging men’s gymnastics norms with his wardrobe. The 21-year-old Olympic bronze medalist swapped traditional stirrup pants for shorts over compression leggings at the U.S. Championships. He accepts a three-tenths deduction each day for breaking uniform rules, believing it’s worth it to make the sport more appealing. Richard’s goal is to inspire young boys by making gymnastics more accessible. He debuted his new look at Winter Cup in February and refined it for nationals. While the clothing violates the rules, Richard is determined to push boundaries and hopes for more flexibility in uniform rules.
