The unwritten rules of tennis and why postmatch handshakes sometimes go awry at the US Open

Two episodes at this year’s U.S. Open have shown that not every postmatch handshake in tennis goes well. There’s been a lot of talk about the unwritten rules of tennis during the Grand Slam tournament in New York that ends next weekend and much of the conversation stems from to-dos up at the net. There was the lengthy back-and-forth between Taylor Townsend and Jelena Ostapenko and a shorter contentious exchange between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Daniel Altmaier. No one thinks handshakes should leave the sport, but some wonder if such conversations are better left to the locker room.

Lee Corso has made his final headgear pick on ESPN’s “College GameDay,” choosing Brutus Buckeye. Corso picked the third-ranked Buckeyes to beat top-ranked Texas on Saturday. He made the prediction on the 50-yard line at Ohio Stadium, a change from his first pick in 1996, which was done in a parking lot. Corso, who turned 90 in August, has been part of “GameDay” since its start in 1987. The show celebrated his career, looking back at his entertaining pregame predictions. Corso has worn 69 different schools’ mascot headgear, with a 66.5% winning rate.

Coco Gauff plays a stress-free match at the US Open and will play Naomi Osaka next

For the first time at this U.S. Open, Coco Gauff didn’t double-fault in her first service game. And for the first time, she didn’t get broken to begin things, either. With her work-in-progress serve looking the best it has so far in this trip to Flushing Meadows, the No. 3-seeded Gauff turned in by far her most solid performance Saturday, defeating No. 28 Magdalena Frech of Poland 6-3, 6-1 to reach the fourth round of a tournament she won in 2023. There were none of the tears or struggles that marked Gauff’s first two matches. Gauff will face Naomi Osaka on Monday for a quarterfinal berth.

Lee Roy Jordan, a linebacker on the first Super Bowl-winning team for the Dallas Cowboys in the 1970s, has died. He was 84. The Cowboys announced Jordan’s death without saying when he died or giving a cause of death. Jordan was a first-round draft pick by Dallas in 1963 after a standout career at Alabama, where he played for the late Paul “Bear” Bryant. Jordan was a big part of the “Doomsday” defense that carried the Cowboys to a Super Bowl title in a 24-3 victory over the Miami Dolphins during the 1971 season.

Chase Briscoe’s playoff expectations increase with JGR as NASCAR postseason starts at Darlington

Chase Briscoe feels the pressure at Darlington Raceway, where NASCAR’s playoffs start Sunday at the Southern 500. A season ago, Briscoe used a late-pass at Darlington to win and get into the postseason for soon-to-be-shuttered Stewart-Haas Racing. Briscoe drives for Joe Gibbs Racing now and understands making the playoffs is only the first step of what his new program expects to accomplish. Hendrick Motorsports’ William Byron starts as the regular-season champion. Denny Hamlin and Shane van Gisbergen each have a series-high four wins this season. Hamlin is making his 19th postseason appearance as he tries for his first title.

The No. 6-seeded Shelton, a two-time major semifinalist, stopped right after dropping the fourth set against Adrian Mannarino to force a fifth. But early in the fourth, the 2023 U.S. Open semifinalist began wincing and said to his coach’s box: “I did something to my shoulder. I don’t know what it is.”

He freely acknowledges that he’s not the best coach in his own family; his father, a track coach with more championship rings than fingers and toes, has that distinction. And not only is he taking on the task of being a first-time head coach, he’s doing so while also calling FAU’s plays.

US Open foes Taylor Townsend and Jelena Ostapenko get into a tense back-and-forth after match

U.S. Open opponents Taylor Townsend and Jelena Ostapenko got into a face-to-face argument on the Court 11 sideline right after their second-round match ended. Townsend said Wednesday that Ostapenko told her she has no class and no education. Townsend, who is from Chicago, was a 7-5, 6-1 winner against 2017 French Open champion Ostapenko, who is from Latvia. After the two players met at the net for a postmatch handshake, they stayed near each other instead of going their separate ways, as players usually do. Ostapenko wagged a finger at Townsend as they spoke.

Young players have questions. At the US Open, Billie Jean King always has answers

Two days before the U.S. Open’s singles competition began, Billie Jean King sat around a table in the Arthur Ashe building with a small group of up-and-coming players on the women’s tour. Steps away from the tournament’s biggest stage, the group shared stories, raised questions and listened to King’s advice. It’s a meeting called the Billie Jean King Power Hour, and it’s been a behind-the-scenes staple in New York for 28 years. She was joined last week by WTA veterans Ilana Kloss, Leslie Allen and Shelby Rogers.

Need a vacation? Imagine how US Open tennis players feel during their long season

When the professional tennis tours moved to North America for the tournaments leading into the U.S. Open, Aryna Sabalenka was on vacation. The defending champion in New York skipped an event in Montreal and instead went to Greece because she said she needed a break. Many players understand. Their sport’s season is so long, and the offseason so short, that they don’t wait until the end of the year to chill. Sometimes, they figure, vacation must come during the season. In team sports, there is an ample offseason, so players have time to travel and rest. But for some tennis players, theirs is barely a month.

Shohei Ohtani gets more unpredictable with his pitches and earns his 1st win for the Dodgers

Shohei Ohtani’s reliance on his fastball caught up with him recently, making the Los Angeles Dodgers’ two-way superstar intent on changing his pitch mix. He had given up a combined nine runs and 14 hits in his two previous outings, a pair of Dodgers losses to the Los Angeles Angels, his former team, and the Colorado Rockies. Making his 11th start as he returns from elbow surgery two years ago, Ohtani struck out a season-high nine over five innings in a 5-1 victory against the Cincinnati Reds for his first win on the mound with the Dodgers. His previous pitching win came on Aug. 9, 2023, with the Angels against San Francisco.

If he plays and the Americans lose at Bethpage Black, it’s because he had too much on his plate and should have picked someone else.
