Why some football coaches are ditching college jobs for the NFL

Recent changes in college football are prompting some long-time college coaches to more eagerly pursue NFL opportunities. One of them is Saints first-year defensive backs coach Terry Joseph, who says he loved working in college football for most of the past 19 years. But he left the Texas Longhorns because of how recruiting had changed since recent rule changes liberalizing player movement and payments. Joseph and other long-time college coaches say those changes have largely ended the days when lifelong relationships could be built out of years of mentoring and developing players. They say college coaches now constantly must monitor whether players they’d successfully recruited previously are looking to leave for better financial or playing-time opportunities.

UCF is also 2-0, and the state’s seven FBS teams have a combined record of 11-3. This ties the best start in the 21-year era of Florida having this many FBS schools. Florida State already has matched its win total from last season. The state schools have four wins against AP-ranked opponents, a significant improvement from last year. Coaches and players are optimistic what it all might mean.

Steelers sign Jabrill Peppers to bolster secondary after DeShon Elliott’s injury

The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed veteran safety Jabrill Peppers as DeShon Elliott recovers from a knee injury. Coach Mike Tomlin announced the move on Tuesday. Peppers, recently cut by New England, brings versatility and special teams skills. The Steelers, who beat the New York Jets in their opener, host Seattle on Sunday. Tomlin hasn’t ruled out Peppers playing soon. Elliott’s absence leaves a gap in communication for the revamped secondary. Despite giving up 394 yards to the Jets, the Steelers’ defense made key stops to secure the win. Tomlin emphasized resilience, saying, “You win some battles, you lose some battles.”

Titans coach Brian Callahan didn’t challenge call on a catch and his explanation doesn’t help

Titans coach Brian Callahan said Monday he did know the NFL catch rule and misspoke after Tennessee’s 20-12 loss to Denver when asked why he didn’t challenge a call. Callahan said he should have challenged when rookie Elic Ayomanor appeared to catch a 21-yard pass but was ruled out of bounds. Callahan initially believed an elbow down wasn’t enough for a catch, but the NFL rulebook states otherwise. He now accepts the mistake was his.

Speaking to reporters at the NHL player media tour in Las Vegas, Crosby struck a balanced tone about the buzz, his current circumstances as part of a rebuilding organization and the desire of other teams and fan bases wanting him.

New York Liberty are set to enter playoffs healthy and confident despite No. 5 seed

The New York Liberty are finally healthy heading into the playoffs and the defending champions have confidence they can win another title. The road won’t be easy as the team is a No. 5 seed and will most likely have to start the postseason on the road in Phoenix. Since the WNBA changed its playoff format in 2016 to the top eight teams regardless of conference making the postseason, no five seed has ever won a championship. The only team not in the top two to do it was Chicago in 2021, which was a six seed.

Tale of two cups: Ryder Cup has Seve and Europe, and Walker Cup has only American dominance

Europe has been part of the Ryder Cup as long as Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm have been alive. And that’s all because of a decision in 1978 that was largely about including Seve Ballesteros. That’s what the Walker Cup is lacking and the Americans are dominating. They won at Cypress Point for their fifth in a row with a team better on paper and on grass. The Americans won’t have it that easy at the Ryder Cup. But the pro game is different and there’s no need for the Walker Cup to mess with history and include Europe.

Glasnow struck out 11 over seven innings in his first career start against Colorado. Scott secured his 21st save after Ritter’s hit. On Saturday, Yoshinobu Yamamoto lost a no-hitter in the ninth against Baltimore, who won 4-3.

No no-no: Slade Cecconi flirts with ending Guards’ long no-hitter drought in 10-2 romp over Royals

Slade Cecconi didn’t need anyone to tell him he was throwing a no-hitter. He found out on his own. Stealing a glance at Progressive Field’s giant scoreboard, Cecconi noticed something unusual — zeros. Cecconi took a no-hitter into the eighth before Kansas City’s Micheal Massey hit a single to spoil the right-hander’s bid to throw the majors’ first no-hitter this season and end Cleveland’s 44-year drought without a no-hitter. That hardly mattered as the Guardians rolled to their fourth straight win, 10-2 and jumped the Royals in the standings. Cleveland’s last no-hitter was Len Barker’s perfect game in 1981.

Ravens’ late-game collapse against Bills raises more questions about their ability to finish

The Baltimore Ravens have built a reputation for excellence that they sabotage just enough to result in defeat. That was the story of Sunday night’s 41-40 loss at Buffalo. The Ravens moved the ball at will at times on offense but couldn’t hold onto the ball in the fourth quarter, giving the Bills a chance to rally. Coach John Harbaugh says “in hindsight,” the play-calling was an issue. The Ravens’ reputation for folding in big moments will likely hang over them all season — and nothing short of a Super Bowl run may be enough to change it.

Aroldis Chapman has a reputation as a power pitcher, built through 16 years of routinely popping 100 mph on the radar gun. As Boston Red Sox closer has gotten older, the 37-year-old added craftiness to the power, baffling hitters by locating sliders and splitters that leave them flailing. The combination led to a rare four-strikeout inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks and one of the most dominating runs by a reliever in baseball history. Chapman joined elite company with his four strikeouts in the ninth inning against Arizona after Ildemaro Vargas reached on a wild pitch. The left-hander has not allowed a hit in 17 straight appearances over 14 2/3 innings, the third-longest run since 1901.

Bett’s spitting foul came two days after Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter was ejected for spitting on Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott in the NFL opener.

Florida coach Billy Napier back on the proverbial hot seat after meltdown against USF

Florida coach Billy Napier is back on the proverbial hot seat after an 18-16 home loss to South Florida. Napier raved about his team’s character and composure heading into his fourth season in Gainesville. Yet the 13th-ranked Gators melted down in nearly every way possible while losing to the Bulls in the Swamp. No one should be surprised if that was Napier’s last game at Florida Field. After all, he dropped to 20-20 overall, including 14-7 at home, and has consecutive road games upcoming against No. 3 LSU and No. 5 Miami. Lose both and Florida could make a change during its first off week.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto was an out from a no-hitter. It somehow turned into another loss for the Dodgers

Yoshinobu Yamamoto came close to a no-hitter at Camden Yards, only to allow a home run to Baltimore’s Jackson Holliday. That sparked a four-run rally in the ninth inning, leading the Orioles to a 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday night. The Dodgers have now lost five straight games, missing a chance to widen their lead in the NL West. The Orioles, celebrating the 30th anniversary of Cal Ripken Jr.’s record-breaking game, pulled off what has to be considered their win of the year. Yamamoto, who had 10 strikeouts, was relieved after Holliday’s homer.

An out from being no-hit, the Orioles stun the Dodgers with 4 runs in the 9th to win 4-3

Jackson Holliday homered with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to deny Yoshinobu Yamamoto a no-hitter, and the Baltimore Orioles weren’t satisfied with that, rallying for four runs in the inning to defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-3 in a delirious comeback. Emmanuel Rivera’s two-run single off Tanner Scott won it. Scott also allowed a walk-off homer to Orioles rookie Samuel Basallo the previous night. But the real culprit was Blake Treinen, who relieved Yamamoto after Holliday’s homer. He gave up a double to Jeremiah Jackson, hit Gunnar Henderson and walked Ryan Mountcastle and Colton Cowser to make it 3-2.

The Kansas City Chiefs looked sloppy and lackluster in a season-opening 27-21 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in Brazil. That’s the bad news.
