Florida restores Vernon Maxwell’s college stats, making him the program’s leading scorer again

Florida has formally restored basketball great Vernon Maxwell’s final two years of college statistics. The move once again makes him the program’s all-time leading scorer. The 60-year-old Maxwell will celebrate the turnabout with friends, family and former teammates during a program reunion this weekend. Maxwell scored 2,450 points during his four seasons at Florida in the late 1980s. But he also was the focus of an NCAA investigation that ultimately placed the Gators on unsanctioned probation. Hollywood endings: LA icons Clayton Kershaw, Anze Kopitar announce impending retirements on same day

When Clayton Kershaw and Anze Kopitar announced their impending retirements two hours apart Thursday, the Los Angeles sports world was forever changed in an afternoon. The timing was pure coincidence for the Dodgers’ enduring ace and the Kings’ longtime captain, and their decisions were relatively unsurprising. These two 21st-century LA icons still created an epochal sports day in their adopted town. Kopitar said the timing was “kind of funny,” but he was also grateful for Kershaw to take some of the spotlight away from him.

No moral victories in losing, says coach McDaniel after Dolphins drop to 0-3 in 31-21 loss to Bills

Better performance. Similar outcome. Seeking to avoid their first 0-3 start since 2019, and driven to change the narrative regarding coach Mike McDaniel’s job security, the Miami Dolphins came up short in a 31-21 loss to the Buffalo Bills. Critical late-game errors cost once again cost the Dolphins in losing for the 14th time in 15 meetings to their AFC East nemesis, and at a Bills stadium where they’ve dropped 10 straight dating to 2017, including playoffs. McDaniel refused to accept any moral victories by saying the performance wasn’t good enough. The outcome was decided with three minutes left when Tua Tagovailoa’s pass was intercepted by linebacker Terrel Bernard.

WNBA playoffs: Three decisive Game 3s highlight a balanced season

It’s fitting that many of the opening round playoff series are going the distance after the balanced regular season the WNBA had. They’ll be three decisive Game 3s over the next two days. That’s the first time that’s happened since 2015. Last season all four opening round series were sweeps. The WNBA changed its playoff format this season giving each team at least one home game in the opening round which probably has helped. In the past few years, the better seeded team would have the first two games at home. Indiana and Seattle evened up their series on their homecourt Tuesday night and Golden State came within a point of beating No. 1 Minnesota to make it 4-for-4 on series going the distance.

Scottie Scheffler being the last pick for the Ryder Cup played a part in him becoming No. 1 in the world. It was four years ago when Steve Stricker used his last captain’s pick on a guy who had never won on the PGA Tour and was the 14th-ranked American at the time. Stricker says it’s cool to see how Scheffler turned a big week in Whistling Straits into an amazing run of golf. Scheffler says losing the Ryder Cup in Rome also inspired him to make sure he was ready. And he looked the part by winning in Napa.

NFL teams don’t use game-day roster flexibility with emergency QBs as often as one would think

The NFL is in its third season since the return of a rule that allows teams to designate an emergency third quarterback without using a spot on the active game-day roster. Less than half the teams utilized the provision the first two years. That’s in part because a third QB has to be on the team’s 53-man active roster. Rosters on game day are smaller. An emergency quarterback has played just once the past two years. Jameis Winston did it with Cleveland last season.

Here’s how a penalty for leverage cost the Broncos a game against the Colts

Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton sounded content to let others debate Sunday’s leverage call against linebacker Dondrea Tillman. Payton wanted no part of it. And neither did the rest of the Broncos. Tillman was flagged for leverage on a missed 60-yard field-goal attempt by the Colts’ Spencer Shrader. The penalty allowed Shrader to kick again from 45 yards with no time left and the Colts won 29-28. Quarterback Bo Nix says the Broncos made plenty of mistakes that put the game in officials’ hands. Payton didn’t dispute that Tillman committed the infraction, which involves using another player to vault into the air.

Spencer Shrader made a 45-yard field goal with no time left after the Broncos were penalized for leverage on his missed 60-yard try, and the Indianapolis Colts beat Denver 29-28 for their first 2-0 start since 2009. Those plays netted 26 yards and set up Shrader’s attempt from midfield that missed short and right. But Dondrea Tillman was flagged for leverage — using another player to vault himself into the air to try to block the kick. The 15-yard personal-foul penalty put Indy well within Shrader’s range.

Coach Kevin Stefanski says Judkins has been working hard to get up to speed. The Browns are looking to improve their run game after a poor performance last week against Cincinnati.

A two-time Cy Young Award winner who went 82-57 in nine seasons for the Mets, deGrom received a somewhat muted response when he took the mound only because fans were stunned when the Texas Rangers knocked out rookie Josh Tong after two outs in a 22-minute top of the first.

Russian bobsled and skeleton athletes will not compete at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics. The International Bobsled and Skeleton Federation voted Friday against allowing Russian athletes to compete as neutral individuals at the games in February. This decision follows a similar move by the International Luge Federation in June. Russian athletes have been barred from major international events since the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Even if the vote had been different, qualifying would have been challenging because of their absence from top competitions. Russia might appeal, but time is running out with the World Cup season starting November 21.

Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders have not looked nearly as good so far this season

It’s only been two games so far, but Jayden Daniels and the rest of the Washington Commanders have looked quite a bit like the oldest team in the NFL and very little like the club that went 12-5 and made it to the NFC title game last season. The offense is nowhere near as explosive or as efficient as it was as Daniels earned AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. And the defense was not up to the task in a 27-18 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Thursday night that dropped Washington’s record to 1-1.

The Bills face a short turnaround next week in hosting the Miami Dolphins on Thursday night following their game at New York on Sunday.
