Aces, BetMGM Sportsbook team up: What this means for the WNBA

The announcement last week was made in true Las Vegas fashion. It was bold and loud and in the heart of the Strip. Representatives from the Aces, MGM Resorts and a local charity placed their hands on a big red button that they together pushed down. Then the famous Bellagio fountains suddenly roared behind them as water blasted into the sky. They announced a three-year sponsorship between the WNBA team and BetMGM Sportsbook. It was timed for a news release in which the league reached a similar agreement.

All-Star Corbin Burnes set for Tommy John surgery, ending his 1st season in Arizona

All-Star right-hander Corbin Burnes of the Arizona Diamondbacks is set to undergo Tommy John elbow surgery, ending his season early in the first year of a $210 million, six-year contract. It’s the richest deal in club history. The 30-year-old exited his most recent start with Arizona leading 3-0 in the top of the fifth inning Sunday. After Burnes allowed a single by CJ Abrams with two outs, he gestured toward the dugout with his glove and yelled in frustration. The injury will end a four-year run of All-Star appearances for Burnes.

Former Tennessee football coach Derek Dooley eyes GOP Senate run against Jon Ossoff in Georgia

Former University of Tennessee football coach Derek Dooley says he is considering running for U.S. Senate in 2026 as a Republican against Democratic incumbent Jon Ossoff. Gov. Brian Kemp’s decision not to run for the seat has left Georgia Republicans looking for other options to face off against Ossoff. The 56-year-old Dooley says he will decide on a bid in coming weeks. Among Republicans who have declared their candidacies are U.S. Rep. Buddy Carter, Insurance Commissioner John King and activist Reagan Box. Dooley would be banking on his status as the son of legendary University Georgia coach Vince Dooley and Kemp’s long ties to the Dooley family.

Thunder collapse late as Haliburton’s buzzer-beater lifts Pacers to Game 1 win

Things were going as expected for the heavily favored Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 1 of the NBA Finals. They forced the normally efficient Indiana Pacers into 19 turnovers in the first half to lead by 12 at the break. That advantage had swelled to 15 early in the fourth quarter, and it looked like the Thunder were off to one of their usual blowout victories. The Thunder fell apart late, then Tyrese Haliburton hit a mid-range dagger that gave Indiana a 111-110 victory. The homecourt advantage Oklahoma City fought all season to gain vanished in a game it dominated for three quarters.

Dallas Stars fire coach Pete DeBoer after losing in the West final for a 3rd year in a row

Dallas Stars coach Pete DeBoer has been fired after three seasons with the team, getting to the Western Conference final each time but never advancing past that for a shot at the Stanley Cup. The move came Friday, a week since the Stars ended their season in a 6-3 loss at home to Edmonton in Game 5 of the West final. DeBoer made the curious and much-discussed decision to bench Jake Oettinger after his star goalie gave up two goals on two shots in the first 7:09. Two days later, the coach acknowledged he still hadn’t talked to Oettinger about that decision.

US Open ’25: Oakmont’s par-3 8th hole requires removing a head cover

Oakmont is known for its bunkers and fast greens. But also getting a lot of attention going into the U.S. Open is the par-3 eighth hole. It measures 289 yards on the card as the longest par 3 in the majors. But it is certain to play 300 yards or more at least in one of the rounds as it did in the 2007 U.S. Open. Viktor Hovland is among those who don’t like a par 3 that stretches so long players have to remove head covers on their fairway metals. He says then it starts getting silly.

The Comeback Playoffs: There have been 10 rallies from 15 points or more down in this NBA postseason

Welcome to the Comeback Playoffs, led by the Indiana Pacers. Indiana’s rally from 15 points down in Game 1 of the NBA Finals was the 10th such comeback — from 15 or more — in this season’s playoffs. The Pacers and Tyrese Haliburton are responsible for five of those comebacks; the rest of the league, combined, have the other five. Since the NBA began keeping track of such things in 1997, there has never been a postseason with more 15-point comebacks or more by a single team than the Pacers have pulled off this spring.

It’s a Thunder rule: To work in OKC, you must learn about OKC and what the bombing meant to the city

The Thunder didn’t even exist in Oklahoma City when the 1995 bombing happened; the franchise that had been known as the Seattle SuperSonics didn’t relocate to America’s heartland until more than a decade later. But it has been part of the steadfast commitment that the team shows the city; the bombing still resonates deeply here, and the Thunder have taken great pains to not ignore the impact it had, and has, on Oklahoma City. That is why every newly acquired player, even those on tryout contracts or just training camp deals, and every person who gets a job with the organization, has to go to the memorial.

They were turning the ball over about once every three possessions, couldn’t stop Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and had the Oklahoma City crowd in a deafening fury. What happened next, for the Pacers, was theater.

Freeman’s slicing fly to deep left field was misplayed by Brandon Nimmo, who got twisted around and appeared to lose sight of the ball as it dropped on the warning track beside him. That allowed automatic runner Tommy Edman to score from second base with one out. The Dodgers earned their 20th comeback win of the season after blowing a 4-1 lead they established in the first.

Royals top prospect Jac Caglianone goes hitless but still makes an impact in MLB debut

Royals top prospect Jac Caglianone went 0 for 5 in his major league debut, but his presence was enough to help Kansas City overcome a five-run deficit to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 10-7. Caglianone batted sixth as the Royals’ designated hitter. He stepped up to the plate for the first time to lead off the second inning to loud cheers from a crowd that featured plenty of Royals fans who ventured across the state to see the sixth overall pick of the 2024 amateur draft’s debut. Rockies’ 2nd straight win in Miami ends MLB-record streak of series losses at 22

The struggling Colorado Rockies have ended their ignominious, record-setting streak of 22 consecutive series losses, which dated to last season. A nervy 3-2 victory at Miami on Tuesday night, highlighted by Hunter Goodman’s third home run in two games, gave Colorado two straight victories over the Marlins. That ensures the Rockies will leave town with their first series victory since taking two of three games from Arizona in Denver in mid-September. Colorado is a major league-worst 11-50. They won consecutive games for just the second time this year after beating Atlanta on April 30 and San Francisco the next day. Before the Rockies arrived in Miami, they’d gone 3-28 on the road.

The New York Mets have called up prized infield prospect Ronny Mauricio from the minors. The promotion comes after third baseman Mark Vientos strained his right hamstring late in Monday night’s victory over the Dodgers in Los Angeles. Vientos went on the 10-day injured list Tuesday. Mauricio made his major league debut in September 2023 and batted .248 with two home runs, nine RBIs and seven stolen bases in 26 games that year. Whether ratings are good or not, Thunder-Pacers could be a series true basketball fans enjoy

It’s No. 25 Indiana vs. No. 47 Oklahoma City in the NBA Finals. That’s not their seeding. That’s their media market ranking. To some, that might matter. A title matchup that starts Thursday night between the Pacers and Thunder has two young, fun teams that score a ton and are led by marketable stars. That the good news. Here’s the inevitable other side: The ratings, especially at the start of the series, probably aren’t going to be good because the home markets are so small. Those who like the NBA won’t be dissuaded by that. Those who don’t like the NBA will tout it as great failure.
