KEYSTONE, SD — The National Parks Service has issued a notice to residents of and around the area known as the Starling Basin via Facebook.

“The approximate 95 acre unit known as Starling Basin is located west and south of Highway 244 within the Mount Rushmore National Memorial boundary.” said Mount Rushmore National Memorial Representatives. “For safety, some areas of the park may be temporarily closed during the operation.”

Assuming weather conditions permit, burns are expected to begin on Thursday, October 23rd. During this period, the Memorial has warned the public that they should expect to see smoke rising within the 95 acre area, warning that smoke may impact air quality locally within surrounding communities as well as may affect traffic along Highway 244.
