MURDO. S.D. – A small South Dakota town is grieving the loss of a local hero.
Murdo volunteer firefighter Nick Van Dam died in the line of duty after a firetruck accident while responding to a grassfire Saturday night. The Murdo Fire Department released the firefighter’s name in a release late Tuesday.
Van Dam, a husband, father of four, and longtime fire captain, is remembered as a man who served with heart and dedication.
Support is pouring in for his family, with a memorial fund set up at First National Bank in Murdo and a GoFundMe that’s already raised over 11-thousand dollars as of Tuesday.
Funeral details are still being finalized.
