RAPID CITY, S.D. (Sept. 16, 2025) – Monument Health is significantly expanding health care access in the Black Hills, adding 31 new physicians in a 12-week period between July 1 and Oct. 1. The latest recruitment surge brings the total to 107 new providers over the past 27 months.
The additions include three new subspecialties previously unavailable in western South Dakota:
- Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery – Expands the Heart and Vascular Institute with complex aortic surgery and minimally invasive procedures.
- Colorectal Surgery – The first fellowship-trained practice of its kind in Rapid City, providing advanced treatment for complex colorectal conditions.
- Gynecologic Oncology – Completes the Cancer Care Institute’s comprehensive cancer services, offering specialized care for reproductive organ cancers.
“These additions represent our commitment to bringing world-class specialty care to western South Dakota,” said Brad Archer, M.D., Monument Health’s Chief Medical Officer. “Our patients can now access complex procedures and subspecialty treatments that previously required travel to major metropolitan areas.”
Monument Health also bolstered its primary care services with 11 new family medicine and internal medicine physicians. The expansion reaches across 15 specialties, including gastroenterology, neurology, orthopedic surgery, psychiatry, pulmonary/critical care, and sleep medicine.
The system’s new urgent care clinics in Box Elder and Rapid Valley have already treated nearly 700 patients since opening in August. Monument Health also reported its endocrinology practice cared for nearly 10,000 patients last year, underscoring regional demand for specialty care.
The latest round of physician recruitment is part of a system-wide effort to address population growth and health care needs across Rapid City and the Black Hills.
