STURGIS, S.D. – The Meade County Commission today decided to continue second reading of Ordinance 59 to their next meeting.

Ordinance 59 regulates overweight and over dimension vehicles on 20 Meade County roads and has brought a number of concerns from county residents; particularly farmers and ranchers who rely on those roads for their livelihood.

The commission has tweaked the ordinance a bit since first reading earlier this month, including exempting vehicles operated under the direction of a fire chief or similar official when assisting in fire-fighting efforts.

After hearing from West River Electric, the commission also added the Meade County Highway Department may issue an annual fleet permit to any public utility or electric cooperative operating within Meade County.

Commission Chairman Gary Deering says this ordinance is not about setting a weight limit.

The commission did approve adoption of proposed changes today before agreeing to continue discussion on the ordinance to their November 12th meeting.
