Rapid City police shot and killed a man armed with a rifle during a domestic violence call in the 4000 block of Clover Street late Tuesday night, according to police.

Officers responded to the residence shortly before 10 p.m. on October 29th after receiving reports of an active domestic violence incident involving a gun. The caller reported that a male subject had a gun and was threatening to shoot occupants inside the home.

While officers were responding, the man exited the residence carrying a loaded rifle. Police said he ignored multiple commands to drop the weapon and instead pointed the rifle at officers at the scene.

Officers then fired at the man, resulting in an officer-involved shooting. Police said officers immediately provided emergency first aid, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

No officers were injured during the incident.

As is standard practice for officer-involved shootings, the investigation has been turned over to the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation. Further updates on the case are expected to come from that office.
