Rapid City, SD – A 12-week project to replace water valves and resurface a four-block section of Main Street in Rapid City is set to begin Monday, city officials announced. The work, scheduled to last through June, will affect traffic on Main Street between First and Fifth streets.

Starting Monday, city crews will begin repairing and replacing water valves. TruForm Construction will follow, removing and replacing concrete panels and working on sidewalks, curbs, and gutters. The Main Street project will result in the closure of one to two lanes in the affected area.

Authorities are urging drivers to use caution and allow extra travel time if going through the construction zone. Businesses in the area will remain accessible.

Meanwhile, traffic restrictions will continue next week on a portion of St. Joseph Street near Halley Park. Crews are continuing concrete panel repairs, reducing eastbound traffic from three lanes to one between West Street and West Boulevard. That work is expected to be finished by April 15. Drivers are encouraged to find alternate routes, and pedestrians are advised that the crosswalk from 12th Street to Halley Park remains closed.

Message boards have been placed near the construction areas to inform drivers of the traffic changes. The public can find updates on local construction projects on the city’s website by clicking on the “Road Construction Updates” link on the main page.
