Local ambulance service wants bikers to use Rider Alert

CUSTER, S.D. — When seconds count, having immediate access to a person’s medical history can be a life-saver.

Literally.

The Rider Alert motorcycle-safety program is designed to help save lives. It provides free identification data cards that will help first responders provide rapid and accurate medical assistance to motorcyclists involved in serious accidents. It was launched in Richmond, Virginia in 2011.

The Custer Ambulance Service has recently adopted the program that uses a simple card-and-sticker system designed to speak for a rider who cannot.

Rider Alert cards are placed inside riders’ helmets and contain vital, life-saving information, emergency contact and any important medical history. When first responders arrive on the scene of a motorcycle crash, a one-inch, round sticker on the outside of the helmet will indicate that the biker has the Rider Alert card. The sticker also warns bystanders not to remove the helmet, which could prevent further injury.

The Rider Alert cards and stickers are available at the Milwaukee Motorcycle Clothing Company tent in Custer and will also be distributed during the upcoming Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

For those unable to visit one of the distribution tents, Rider Alert kits can be obtained directly from the Custer Ambulance Service.

Interested riders can call the Custer Ambulance Service non-emergency line at (605) 673-3334 or request a card via email at info@custerambulance.org
