STURGIS, S.D. – Fire crews in the Northern Hills were busy responding to fires after thunderstorms with lightning rolled through Tuesday evening.

Sturgis Fire Crews were among those responding to a fire up Vanocker Canyon Rd in the area of the Davenport Ranch southwest of Sturgis.

Smoke could be seen rising from the Pineview Fire as crews converged on the scene.

By nightfall, smoke from the fire was no longer visible as crews were able to contain it. Rain fell on the fire just after 9:00 p.m. Lightning is believed to have sparked the fire, which was less than an acre. Other agencies responding were South Dakota Wildland Fire and Forest Service.

Another small fire was reported in the Blucksberg area just off I-90’s Exit 34 Tuesday night. The Arrow Fire was also sparked by lightning and was out by the time fire crews arrived. Two engines remained on scene to check for hot spots.

And Whitewood area fire crews responded to a blaze off the Whitewood Service Road two miles north of Whitewood. The Whitewood Valley Road Fire burned approximately .18 of an acre and was contained as of Tuesday night.
