NEWELL, S.D. – A family history of farming, dairy and milling grain in South Dakota that dates back to the 1800’s will be the back drop for a field day that focuses on organic ancient grain production and on-farm milling techniques.
The South Dakota Specialty Producers Association invites producers to the field day on June 7, 2025, at Belle Valley Ancient Grains that began with Anders and Anna Quarnberg traveled from Sweden to begin milling in what was then Dakota Territory, near the Belle Fourche River.
Running from 9:00 a.m. to noon (MDT), the session includes presentations and a farm tour led by Brian Stambaugh, the fifth generation, who transitioned from hay farming to organic grain production. Attendees are welcome to bring lunch and join a networking session from noon to 1 p.m.
Stambaugh began farming in 2002 and switched to ancient and heirloom grains in 2015. By 2018, he had certified his 170-acre farm as organic. His land is divided between hay and wheat, with flaxseed, pinto beans, and black beans also grown in rotation. Belle Valley Ancient Grains sells both grains and freshly milled flour through its farm store, online shop, and wholesale channels.
During the guided tour, guests will walk through certified organic ancient grain fields. They will learn about key practices for transitioning to organic production, including soil management, crop rotation, and irrigation strategies.
Visitors will also observe the farm’s efficient irrigation systems and hear how they support sustainable production. The tour covers grain handling techniques such as cleaning, sorting, and storage, which are essential to maintain grain quality and meet organic standards.
A special highlight is the on-farm milling and packaging area. Participants will explore how value-added processing can increase profit margins and open new marketing opportunities for small farms.
Attendees will hear from experienced organic grain growers and specialists about certification steps, market trends, and ways to grow income from organic grains.
