LEAD, S.D. – The Lead Fire Department responded to a structure fire and gas leak calls early Sunday.

According to the L.F.D., at approximately 12:37AM on Sunday August 24th, they were dispatched to the 600 block of Main Street in Lead for the report of a structure fire.

Lead Police Department officers arrived on scene quickly and confirmed visible flames on a deck and deployed fire extinguishers but were unable to subdue the flames.

Upon arrival, LVFD firefighters encountered a multi-level home with a freely burning, covered wrap-around deck. Crews launched an aggressive fire attack, quickly controlling the blaze. They checked the home for fire extension and began overhauling the deck. A compromised support beam for the deck roof was braced to prevent further damage. Before leaving, firefighters ventilated the home using positive pressure fans and a smoke ejector, ensuring safe reentry for residents.

At approximately 01:40 AM, while on scene, the Lead Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a second incident on Mine Street for a reported strange odor in a crawl space. Firefighters from Main Street transferred duties and responded directly. With assistance from Montana Dakota Utilities, they identified a natural gas leak, shut off the gas supply, and cleared the residence for safe occupation.

Lead Unit: Ladder 2, Engine 3, and Squad 7 responded to the incidents.

Assisting Agencies were Lead Police Department, Montana Dakota Utilities, Black Hills Energy, Monument Health Northern Hills Ambulance, and Lawrence County Sherriff’s Office.
