Large grass fire south of Fort Pierre has charred 1,200 acres

STURGIS, S.D. – Great Plains Fire Dispatch says a large grass fire burning in central South Dakota has blackened 1,200 acres as fire crews continue to battle it Sunday.

The War Creek Fire was initially reported just before 10:00 p.m. Saturday night 15 miles south of Fort Pierre.

The fire was burning on both private and federal property with local and federal resources battling the blaze.

The fire was listed as human caused, but specific details of how it started were not made available.

Meanwhile, another fire in the area was reported Sunday morning. The Cookstove Fire was 10 miles south of Fort Pierre.

Local and federal resources quickly jumped on that human-caused fire and were able to contain it at half an acre.
