LANDFILL INSTALLS FLARE SYSTEM TO IMPROVE AIR QUALITY, SUPPORT FUTURE ENERGY PROJECTS

RAPID CITY, SD — Effective Wednesday, the City of Rapid City’s Solid Waste Division began startup of a new candlestick flare system at the Rapid City Landfill, replacing the enclosed flare that has been in place since 2010.

The flare system plays a critical role in treating landfill gas emissions by safely combusting methane and other compounds generated by decomposing waste. This combustion reduces the greenhouse effect of methane by approximately 30 times and eliminates harmful Non-Methane Organic Compounds (NMOCs), helping improve local air quality.

The previous system was operating at nearly 90% of its capacity and had an enclosed flare system, so there was no visible fame. The new candlestick flare not only increases treatment capacity and reliability but also lowers maintenance costs — all while continuing to meet strict air quality regulations. While the new flare will produce an open flame that may be visible from Highway 79, this is a normal and safe part of the system’s operation.

“Rest assured that a visible flame is not a safety concern. It’s actually a sign that efficient gas treatment is happening,” said Rapid City Solid Waste Superintendent Jeff Barber. “Upgrading this infrastructure is a key step in ensuring the landfill operates safely, efficiently, and with future sustainability in mind.”
