GERING, NE — After six years, the fate of a missing Moorcroft, Wyoming man could be close at hand.

The Gering Police Department and multiple other agencies are investigating skeletal remains found last Friday near the Scotts Bluff National Monument in Nebraska.

During the search, the family of Chance Englebert —who went missing in the area on July 6, 2019 — confirmed several items found near the body to be his.

The investigation into his disappearance has been active and ongoing since it was first reported. Rumors have persisted of foul play but no arrests have been made since Englebert’s disappearance on a stormy July 6th night in Gering, NE. That’s about 3.5 miles from the Scotts Bluff National Monument where remains have been found.

The Douglas County Coroner’s Office in Omaha is assisting in the forensic examination of dental records, DNA samples and other scientific examinations of the skeletal remains.

According to authorities, that examination will include a forensic pathologist and scientists from the University of Nebraska-Omaha.

The local investigation is still ongoing.

Chance Englebert was born near Edgemont, S.D., and grew up on his family’s ranch in the nearby rural area of Burdock, S.D. At the time of his disappearance in 2019, he was living in Moorcroft, WY, with his wife and infant son.
